Vacheron overpriced?

So I wandered past a jewellers / grey mkt dealers in Yarm earlier and clocked this FiftySix in the window!

Normally they only have in the usual crop of Subs and Daytonas, which spark no interest for me whatsoever… but I’ve got a real soft spot for Vacheron so I dived in to have a goosey.

Its lovely no question and I decinitely appreciate the horology involved in the ”complete calendar” (pointless to photograph in the store hence using the stock shot here), but I was really surprised when the clerk let me know they were asking for £30k for this ref in steel. List price is 26 🤔

Im at least 5-10 yrs away from being able to dive into making actual purchases at this level, but it’s nice to theorise isn’t it?!

So on theorising, I can’t help but think that for 30k I’d want precious metal in the same vein as Breguet / JLC (Eg the GORGEOUS Master world timer in 18k Rose Gold pictured) … Am I asking too much??

Yeah I wouldn’t spend 30 on that.

It's a Vacheron Constantine. I guess they don't bother with steel much these days to the point where they'll jack up the price. Everyone of the big three does it.

·

My Rule #1:  NEVER pay more than MSRP on a piece.  In general, I've been fortunate enough to pick up my watches with a 15% or greater discount.  I did have to pay MSRP for my BB GMT though.  The AD I visited to had no issues with selling it to me at list.

That's not actually true -- the 56 and Overseas collections have long had steel options available.

Short answer? Yes?

Do you have a shortlist of dream pieces at that price point?

Like they’re putting it against the retail of a nautilus and RO there aren’t they?!

Nice… 👍🏻 It’s not a hard n fast rule for me personally to never pay over retail, IF (and big IF) there’s value still in the mix and I actually love the piece itself.

I just don’t see a lot of either here…

That’s a cracking analysis mate… and yes, I was shocked because in my head the FiftySix is the entry way into the brand so 12-15 was more my expectation for the line, 20-22 max for the complication… particularly when compared against JLC etc

I’ll keep saving for the Overseas 🤣 #goodgrief

I think that's what he's saying. By saying "they don't bother much in steel" is his way of saying "because they don't have many steel pieces, they can jack up the price due to exclusivity and rarity". You are both saying the same thing.

If I was spending that kind of money on a VC then i would be this one

This. Thank you for...what's the word, expanding on what I mean.

9 times out of 10, If it's from Europe you're gonna pay.

VC make great watches but I wouldn't ever pay over list for them nor would I ever purchase on gray market. Just not worth the exposure of not having proper box/papers/warranty.

I would definitely pass on the FiftySix priced over list and not from an AD.

I'm hanging tight for this one...hoping my name comes up on the list soon...

Any watch over 2k is an unnecessary luxury. If you look at it on a cost plus basis.  But hey, my fav brand is Casio so there's that.  I agree with others that you should never pay over MSRP.  99% of watches lose value immediately after purchase. So overpaying is really a downer.
