As a routine I wash my watch at night and then wipe it dry before putting it away until the next day. I have done this since 2021 when I started accumulating a small watch collection. Never have I ever dropped a watch since then. Until last night.
I was wiping my watch dry when it just slipped out of my hand and fell about 18 inches onto the carpet. I must have yelled an expletive or three before it even landed with a soft thud. I immediately picked it up and inspected everything. No dents on the case. No cracks on the crystal front and back. No damage to the crown. Bracelet is intact. Hands and indexes were in the right place. The movement as seen from the case back looked normal. I even unthreaded the crown and gave it a wind to see if the winding is still smooth. Everything checked out ok. All that remained was for me to wait overnight and then check the watch in the morning to see if timekeeping had been affected.
I am happy to report that as of this morning the watch has still maintained its perfect timekeeping. Crisis averted?😊
For the experienced collectors out there, what other things should I check to see if any damage had occured to my watch? Thank you.
Note to self: wipe down the watch on top of a soft surface/table from now on. 😄

No further investigation needed if all seems well. 18 inches onto a carpet shouldn't hurt a watch.
Washing a watch every night is probably more dangerous. OCD and watch collecting don't usually reflect a pleasurable journey.

Thank you for the assurance.🥰
Reason why I wash the watch after use is because I sweat on them and I don't like all that to stay on the watch for a long period of time. I rotate through 27 watches currently so they don't necessarily get washed every day, just on the day I use them. 😊
Whew! Thank you for the comforting words. 😄
Agreed, I love this dial and how it changes color and patterns depending on lighting.
your safe... it has a spring in it
18” drop on carpet, no matter which part of the watch received the most brunt of impact should be totally fine. Tbh, my heart would also sink, since I’m super fastidious with my watches. Carry on… 🤙😊

Good to know 🥰

Yes i nearly had a heart attack 🤣
I startled the whole household when i yelled out bad words just as the watch left my hands
Sooo.. Carpet in the bathroom? Thank heaven!?!😂

Haha, livingroom this time. 😆
Did the watch come like that or did the dial start rippling after you dropped it? Jk, glad things worked out

Force of impact caused it😅
Hehe thanks. Im glad too. It's supposed to be my "last" watch. 😇
It’s a spring drive so I’m not surprised accuracy wasn’t affected. If it was a balance wheel and hair spring on the other hand…

Can you go into more details about the washing process please. My mind is all over the place over this!

I just rinse the watch under a low pressure faucet with cool water while rubbing my thumbs around it so as to wash off any dust and sweat on the surfaces. Then I use a microfiber cloth to wipe it dry while I am sitting at the couch, at the same time admiring the look of the watch. Once the watch is dry i would place it dial up in the whisky cabinet on top of soft cloth to allow it to air dry overnight. In the morning i would place that watch inside the cushioned watch box and pick out the next watch for the day. This is my routine. I do this every day to the point my wife thinks it's obsessive. 😄
I just dropped my Bulova Dinner Plate, I mean Lunar Pilot on the wooden floor from about 4 ft. I was taking the watch off as I was walking, and it dropped.
The watch is fine.
The floor did not fare so well.
I guess I'm never selling this watch to anyone on this forum ever. 😉
They need to make a grand Seiko g shock Collab! LMAO
Zaratsu polished resin cases for all! 🤣

That is one tough watch 😁

Seems like it. 😀
I would have freaked out a lot more had I dropped one of my Grand Seikos or my vintage Omega. The Bulova has the sapphire crystal protruding out pretty far out of the case. Apparently that sapphire is pretty tough - at least against the softer hardwood floor.
Thanks for the advice, but i live in a tropical country and sweat a lot. That's the main reason why i like to rinse my watches after each use. The same way you would rinse your diver's watch after soaking in seawater. I take the precaution of only ever using cool water and never turning the faucet on full blast. I am just not confident enough with just a wipedown without a full wash. Also, none of my watches are under 100m water resistance and they are either on metal bracelet or rubber/silicon straps. No leathers or cloth for me (because im a sweater). 😄
Ok, then try this: wipe down the crystal as I suggested, and then dip the very tip of a microfiber cloth into rubbing alcohol (70%) and wipe down the stainless steel parts of the watch. Alcohol will not harm stainless steel, and it is a more effective cleaner than water. And since you'd be using a damp cloth, instead of running water, there's less chance of any alcohol getting into places where it shouldn't be. Cheers! 🍷

Thanks for the great advice 🥰
18 inches? Child's play! I dropped my Oris Divers 65 from about 4 feet onto a hardwood floor while trying to strap it to my wrist. Mucked up the movement - would only work sporadically thereafter. Four months and $488.45 later, it was as good as new! 😭

Ouch dang! That is pretty high. Good thing it is fixed now.
Mine was definitely child's play compared to what you experienced but at the time it was happening it was the scariest event in the world 🤣
You did fine...Im sure you have no worries...enjoy

Do you use an ultrasonic cleaner?

No sir just slow running cool water from the faucet. Quick rinse to get any dust and sweat off. Then wipe it dry with a microfiber cloth.
Ahhh scared me reading that thought this was going to be a horror story, glad your watch made it through the war my friend and remember the wind scratches GS so stay out the breeze said by an old seiko master 🥋

For some reason this beloved watch seems to be a magnet for abuse. I put 2 big nicks on the side of the case on the very day i was bringing it home on the taxi ride.
I agree with you on GS zaratsu polish picking up scratches very easily. I also own a quartz 44GS sbgp003 and that one scratches by just getting stared at on the watch box. 😅
