What do you think about Omega Spirate technology?

I think if Rolex had developed it Windex and paper towels would be impossible to buy, after all the fanboys erupt all over their screens...

Omega desperately wants what Rolex has and they think they can get it from new technology, endless limited editions and quite literally, the moon.

As far as technology, Omega’s plan is merely to one-up Rolex.  Rolex goes deep, Omega goes deeper.  Rolex guards against magnetism, Omega goes a-magnetic.  Rolex sets an accuracy standard, Omega goes one better.

Yet they’re missing the point.  These aren’t the reasons that Rolex is the most desirable watches on the planet.  Sure this new thing is technically cool but it’s not going to get Omega to Rolex level, especially if the new movement is stuck in a comically large (standard Omega), ungodly expensive limited edition.

I think the "Omega wants to be Rolex" thing mostly exists in the heads of the watch community.

Omega knows exactly how Rolex got where it is, and knows that they could follow the same path, but that isn't Omega's place in the Swatch Group. Though Omega will gladly take your money when Rolex can't/won't sell to you...

You buy an Omega for the technology and prestige of owning an Omega. You buy a Breguet to prove you have money and know about watches. You buy a Longines to have a "fancy" watch, and a Tissot to have a "nice" watch. If you want a fun a cheap watch you buy a Swatch, and if you want a cheap, fun watch that pisses off snobs, you buy a MoonSwatch.

Really, both. Caring about high accuracy mechanical watches is like worrying about a high mileage carburetor at this point. Better technology exists for the purpose. But regardless of the realistic fruitlessness of the endeavor, it is impressive and innovative.

I'll be back when I find a nicer way to say that, a la supercars, people buy bragging rights and specifications more than any actual used performance.

That’s it exactly. Omega is already getting the watch nerds who love specs and I guess it’s worth staying ahead.  But I just laugh every time I see another internet post/video about how OMEGA IS BEATING ROLEX!!!  I don’t think anyone will ever beat Rolex out, but if they do it’ll be because they convinced the public they were a better symbol of success, not because they have better specs.

I guess a more charitable view would be that Omega knows this about Rolex and has decided to forge their own path instead of going head to head with Rolex. Whatever the case, I appreciate what both companies do.

Omega’s marketing strategy is to be the most technologically advanced mechanical watch maker in the world, and they are succeeding.

Omega may be mass market and most of their customers may have no clue what they are actually buying, but the fact that they go out of their way to improve their technology and cater to watch enthusiasts is great!

Having a speedy as near as accurate as a spring drive is pretty baller. Is it necessary? no. is it cool to me? hell yes! waiting for the spirate to make its way into other models. Gimme a '57 or a chronoscope with that tech or even a 3861 sapphire sandwich :)
