Monta Skyquest II

Hello All,

First post from me.

I just ordered this and expect it to arrive next week. I'd be interested in thoughts both positive and otherwise.

I used to own a modern Rolex GMT-Master II (one of two Rollies I owned). I got rid of it because it just didn't feel right - super well made but just a little too much for my tastes.

Since then I've kept my eye open for something good but a bit more modest, if that makes sense. I have to say that this wasn't a priority because my watch collecting had gone in lots of different directions since.

Anyway, having considered several microbrands and legacy brands, I came across this one from Monta. I know lovers of the first gen version are unhappy because this iteration loses some of the personality of the original. At the same time (for me) it captures an essence without being a full-on copy.

The best way I can describe this watch is that it picks up on the GMT-Master and subsumes it into its own look. Anyone acquainted with watches won't mistake one for the other. So that's a good indication of personality, I think.

I also own a Formex Essence 39 and consider the Monta to be somewhat of that ilk - good design, good build, distinctive looks on them both. Both also sit somewhere between legacy brands and microbrands, depending on how each is defined.

I'm not a movement bug, and I don't think much of the caller vs. traveller GMT debate, which I find trivial and boring (I've had both and actually prefer the caller option).

So, putting those tidbits to one side, I'd appreciate feedback on the watch, especially from friends who have first-hand experience of it. Or, if not, general impressions are just as welcome.

Thanks!

Well I'm completely biased. I have this watch with the opaline dial. I think its my favorite watch. Its just spectacular in every way. Its the only watch i own that i find myself taking off once or twice per day to just look at and admire. I think you will be pleased.

Not had one or seen one in the flesh, but I've read nothing but praise for them. I'm very much not a fan of microbrands, but Monta , CW and very few others I would certainly consider buying myself.

Thanks. Informed bias is the best bias.

I've watched reviews of your watch and it looks lovely with that opaline dial. I believe it was feedback on that watch that set the course for the one pictured above, but I might be wrong.

Having had my Rolex experience, I spent a while considering the likes of modern Tudor and Longines. Tudor is still a No because, despite all the hullabaloo, it's just too derivative. I've enjoyed Longines and have had two, so it was time to try something else.

That brought me to microbrands, including Monta if it can be classed as such. I don't know my way around as well as others, but that's fine because it makes it exciting. Monta seemed like a good move to address that whimsical urge for a pepsi.

Thanks much. Yes they do seem to enjoy good press but I guess the proof of the pudding etc. etc. I'm inclined to withhold judgment on my own choices so that I can retain some critical perspective.

I fully respect your perspective on what's out there. Curiosity has led me all over the place, with favourite watches past and present includes a rinky-dink Lip Montre Diode at one end of the spectrum, to an Urban Jürgensen at the other. Cheers.

Welcome to the Crunch! Though I don’t have one, I have read enough positive posts here to believe it to be a solid choice. Enjoy!

Much appreciated. Solid is good!

Solid choice. Welcome to WC.

I love my Skyquest. I have nothing bad to say about it.

The watch just exudes class. Love the color scheme; classic, but with their added touches. I really like the use of glit here, the handset looks great, and the date at 6 is almost always the best spot.

Yep - pretty much all the things that drew me to it, as well as the heralded bracelet.

Monta does a great job, you won’t be disappointed!

Thanks. It looks like a pretty safe bet, and kind of its own thing which I like.

That’s reassuring!

I have the original, it is an awesome watch and certainly a standout relative to peers.

It’s definitely a thing unto itself. I can see how people who liked your original version were nonplussed by the changes made. The two are so different there’s a case to be made to have found a new name for the present version. Let the Skyquest be, and maybe call this one the Sky-something else.

Welcome to the Crunch. The only good thing I can say, my friend, is that getting rid of the Rolex GMT-Master II was a mistake you may regret for the rest of your life, IMHO. Wear the Monta in good health, OF! 🍻

Hi, and thanks for the welcome.

No regrets selling one Rolex or gifting the other to a relative! 🙂

"All the King's horses and all the King's men," though horses are very different from men! But, alas, horses for courses. 😜😎 🥂🍾

Been keeping my eye this particular watch.

Been keeping my eye this particular watch.

Who knows why we make the choices we do? All I know is that I wanted a nice Pepsi GMT. New Rolex is too expensive and looks too aggressive. Vintage Rolex is too expensive and a minefield. My father had one so I got one anyway a few years ago. Didn’t enjoy it and sent it on its way. Since then have circled many alternatives. When this one came to my attention it seems to offer the right balance of things I look for (and things I want to avoid).

I just love the font on the bezel - it makes this watch that much better and different than others in the same zone. If I didn't already have a blue/red GMT, I'd probably get this.

I think so too. I'm not able to put my finger on it, so the best I can say is that it takes that GMT as a template and then repurposes it.

·

congrats! I have this watch in the same colorway. I think my wife likes it more than my Speedy

Thanks. I’ve just been soaking up Monta social media. Serious about watchmaking while keeping the tone light-hearted. I like that.

I don’t have a Skyquest, but I absolutely love my Noble. So much so, I’ve seriously considered getting a second Noble in a different colorway.

The blue dial version is amazing. I’m still learning about Monta and everything I’ve seen so far is both impressive and compelling.

·

Always liked the skyquest, great looking watch specifically the white dial version. But I do miss the old gmt handset that elevated to clear the indicies. It was quirky but it definitely set it apart from other GMTs. Maybe they will bring it back one day.

I know what you mean. I’m late to the party and can see why the first version is missed. The limited edition pepsi with the thinner aluminum bezel and that stepped GMT hand was something different too.

Agreed that aluminum bezel looks so good. Unfortunately for me I was present before they changed it. Always a bit out of my price range and figured it would be a nice gift someday. Once it changed I was kinda sad but oh well, not the end of the world as they are still available second hand.

+1. Aluminium, nice and fat, and gilt which is a more gentle way to incorporate a gold colour than going full-on 1980s two-tone.

·

Monta is an outstanding brand - think what you ordered is a great model and colorway. I have nothing but praise for my Monta Noble and definitely a fan of the brand.

Also agree - I associate Formex and Monta as same tier or peer brands.
