The DS is the 2 dollar watch.(and probably overpriced)

Price Difference: $68

Better quartz movement:  $10

Magnification bubble:  $5

Wider hour and minute hands with lume:  $8

Higher Swiss labour cost:  $20

The words “Swatch” and “Swiss”:  $15

Swatch movement under $30.00 no jewels full retail

date window moulded into plastic crystal negligible cost

lumed hands retail $3.00 full retail

Chinese watch has subsidized shipping cost to $0.00

No argument from me.  The numbers I threw out were total guesswork.  I was hoping that someone more knowledgeable would shed some light on this, and you did.

The one on the right is a tad more basic, and it's interesting to note that metal buckles are more basic than t good plastic/resin one.

I'd split the difference with a true Casio MQ-24 which may be centered between these on a logarithmic price scale.

I love the cheap ones for working on machinery around my equipment yard.

I had a Casio MQ 24 but gave it to my daughter.

So is the concensus the Swatch is worth the comparatively huge mark up!?

·

The Casio and the cheapie are surprisingly similar. Were it not for the subsidy they would be at the same price point. The Swatch gets free batteries and has a better movement but not by much. they are all throwaway when they die.

I have to give Swatch some credit here personally. They did design the SMART car line didn't they? The word is a mashup of Mercedes X Swatch?

I did own a 2009 ForTwo a while back. Loved it.
