Witnessing, but for watches

I had one of those watch nerd unicorn moments at work today.

A new guy started in my department a couple of weeks ago, which brings the size of the IT department up to 4 people including my boss. Needless to say, we all spend a LOT of time around each other and thus end up talking about all manner of different stuff. The new guy and I were chatting earlier and got on the subject of other things we nerd out on. I started talking about watches, and before I could stop myself I was on the computer pulling up page after page of different watches and ranting like a madman about why they either make me all antsy in my pantsy or cause me great consternation.

After I realized I was doing it again, I paused and said something to the effect of "okay sorry I'll shut up now." Instead of moving on, my co-worker said "no I'm really interested in this; whatever you want to tell me, I'm all ears."

I nearly had to pinch myself.

So I then went on for the next half an hour or so in a frenzy. I'm not sure what all I said. It's a bit of a blur. I can say he was almost derisively unimpressed with the Patek Philipe Nautilus, but he wholeheartedly agreed that Roger Smith makes the most impressive and beautiful watches he'd ever seen.

It was a day a watch nerd lives for, and I had to share it.

Love the story. I think I’d have the same freak out moment if anyone even pretended to indulge me.

Show him the Sarpaneva website. It is love or hate.

This is 100% better than any watches in the wild story I've ever told.  Its amazing finding someone who.might just be as broken as you.

How cool is it Valtteri Bottas is a watch nerd?

Enjoy the moment. I would love to have one occasion like that. When my friends and I touch the the subject they all get a bit uncomfortable and seems to ask Why? with their eyes. My only glimce of joy comes from my children and my son in law (to be).

Great story and your colleague has impressive taste...Roger Smith over Patek any day of the week...really impressive for someone new to watches. I think you will be making a convert to the club.

My colleagues wives are very unhappy with me...I am to blame for their families' disposable income being consumed by watches...my daily wrist shots have resulted in numerous purchases from the Watch Crew...that together with me sending them information on hot deals and new releases...

Just today one of my colleagues sent a wrist shot of his new Omega Speedmaster 1957 in burgundy that he picked up while he was in Vegas.

Another is planning to purchase the REC Delorean when it launches tomorrow.

I am an enabler.

...almost derisively unimpressed with the Patek Philipe Nautilus...

Absent the context (read hype), I suspect that most people would feel the same way. It was supposedly revolutionary half a century ago though, but so were intermittent wipers. This is a topic for another thread, but anyone remember that Teddy Baldassare video where he got his gal's opinion on various watches, and she was all "the emperor has no clothes" on several of those grail pieces that nerds like to pretend are so great? This reminds me of that.

My thoughts exactly. I showed him the price of a Nautilus and he was completely incredulous.
