Ever need a break?

Well hello there. How are you? Life treating you okay these days? It's been a minute.

I don't use Facebook, Reddit, Twitter, TikTok, or any social media other than this site, but I've been a member of the WatchCrunch community for a year and some change. I've had to take a couple of extended breaks during that time, both from this place and the world at large. The reasons for that are myriad and complicated, but the oversimplified explanation is that I often find myself looking out upon the world and thinking . . .

Social media burnout is a real thing, even if that social media time is spent solely on what may be the most niche of forums.* And yet! I do find myself coming back after a time away, because I love watches and want to be part of a watch community. I like learning about new brands and models, and I genuinely love it when I see other people experiencing joy from something that also brings me joy.

After doing my best Irish farewell for a few months, it's nice to come back and see familiar names are still popping up in the feed, and it's also refreshing to see some not-so-familair faces.

ANYWAY, here's my point: After lurking for a few days and testing the water with a couple of comments here and there, it also dawned on me that, as much as I love this hobby, I needed a break from the hobby itself--not just from the forum.

Does that ever happen to anyone else on here? Do you ever need a break from the thing that helps you wind down, the thing that you love and is supposed to help distract you from, oh, the crushing ennui and dread of entropy? Seems counterintuitive, right? Am I alone here?

Also here's a shot of my Super Sea Wolf ZO9209, because this is a watch forum after all.

* Yes I know that there are interests that can be considered even more niche than this, but allow me some hyperbole please.

Yes I definitely can sympathize with this point of view.👍

I too have on occasion taken a break from watches as a hobby. These can last up to a week.

·

Yes, I have been collecting watches for 14 years took a 4 years break during 2014–2017, worst decision of my life 😆

·

I think we all felt it from time to time. I did a post once on the topic. Anyway, I’m glad you are back amigo👍 I hope everything is fine with Artyom.

I'm apparently an experience junkie which includes being a serial hobbyist. I don't take a break from a hobby so much as move on to new chapters and new people while being shaped by my previous experiences. I tend to reach either a saturation or fulfillment phase which spurs me to eventually embark on deep dives into new waters. Whatever new chapter awaits it will occur with a decent watch on my wrist. You're wise to retreat into you when the need arises. Though I learn so much from standing upon the shoulders of giants people can be fatiguing. Your post is appreciated!

Hello my friend! Artyom is doing great, thank you. 😀

Know your feelings all too well. I have had numerous hobbies and actually sold most of my biggest hobby and kept 40 pieces lol.

This is my only social media account. Nice to not be so caught up in the slurry of social media.

I really like this sight because I like watches. Another hobby I have lol. Go figure.

Enjoy that watch!

Cheers!

100% - I try to keep myself interested in a few different hobbies/ Interests so that when I get a little bored or when I've essentially consumed everything up to that given moment, I can change my direction for a bit & come back to the watch world with wide eyes & a new outlook.

I need to cut back just because financially, it makes sense. As for social media, I got away from Facebook two years ago and don't miss it. I consider WC as "social media lite", so it doesn't drag me down like FB, but I understand your meaning.

Welcome back again.

Humans are indeed the worst. Unfortunately they’re also sometimes some of the best at the same time. Social media has a way of magnifying the negatives. The clowns on here don’t seem to be all that bad, so I’m sticking around for the time being.

“It was the best of clowns, it was the worst of clowns,” as it were. 😂

I don’t own a motorcycle, but it seems to me that half the allure is the solitary experience and not, as you said, following around the group alphas. As someone who likes to think I march to the beat of my own drum, that sounds terrible.

Not to be too poetic here but life flows like water throughout the years and we shape and mold ourselves to the ebbs and current along the way. What I’m saying is that when you feel it’s time to take a break, it’s time. This hobby will always be here for you when/if you decide to come back. And really if you think about it, it’s a vane hobby where we find ourselves chasing man jewelry that looks good to us. It’s not life, it’s an accent. I do the same thing as you and have been Facebook clean for 3 years now. I love not subjecting myself to the negativity that was polluting my newsfeed at the time. Take care. Peace and Love to everyone.

I definitely fall off the train sometimes and sometimes it’s good to take a break because it’s exciting to get back in. My main problem is a run a YouTube channel and I’ll be getting slot of tracking but then fall off with consistency

I’ve thought about starting a YouTube channel just to see if I can get free watches out of it. 😂
