21mm thick for 550WR!?

I hate to bash companies, as they are giving it the try, and I wish I could start my own watch company, but at the very least has anyone ever asked whats going on over there!?

(I'll admit I've always been suspect of them, as a sailor to name a watch company after a random sail of a boat just seems silly, how about we get even more niche 🙄, that said I quite like the design of the Dumas watch, silly name aside.)

So this watch, the Piccard: https://www.spinnaker-watches.com/collections/piccard/products/piccard-automatic-dark-cerulean-sp-5098-22

The thing is 21mm thick! Makes the BB-Pro seem slim and svelte my early 2000's super model standards. It's 45mm wide, and all it has is 550m water resistance.

By compassion, my Doxa 300T is 42.5mm wide, all of 13.85 thick and gets to 1250 meters deep. Both have an HEV valve.

I just want to know who the designer is over at Spinnaker and thought, 21mm....? Good enough. Tha'ts some real Invicta mall watch nonsense.

Rant over, sorry about that 😂

Its tailoring to a specific market. Some guys are smaller and have...smaller,...things ... and compensate with a big truck and a big watch followed by a big dog. I see it all the time here.

Spinnaker sounds nautical, so for a company focused on dive watches it makes some sense. More sense than a Swiss watch company founded by a German bearing the name of an English dynasty that died out in 1603...

I think @cageyjames nailed it on Spinnaker designs. They get the easy parts right, but stumble in the execution of the idea. I have nearly liked a few of their designs over the years, but there is usually something pretty significant in the details that kills any interest.

I suspect the idea behind the Picard is to appeal to customers who want "wrist presence".

You know, the design is decent, but then I see that stupid inner ring emblazoned with “Helium Release Valve”

Seriously? Why is that even there? It’s like another company that has to put their name all over in the same spot 😂

What about those of us that have a big truck because we actually need it? 🥺

Right!? Even on the Rolex Deep Sea I don't get it, which I imagine Spinnaker is trying to emulate here. Ironically the Deep Sea is 17.7mm thick at 44mm wide, so a few hairs better on the thickness. But she'll get you to 3,900 meters.

Its almost like the Spinnaker design team skipped the last pre-production meeting and just emailed in Good Enough!😂

Did I read those specifications correctly?  21mm thick? 7/8 of an inch?  Really?  There is a reason I shy away from microbrands.  I'd rather spend the money on a Doxa or maybe an Omega Proplof.  But hey, to each their own...

What, you don’t like wearing a snow globe on your wrist, peasant? 😜

I’m a sailing enthusiast, myself, and have wanted to pick up a spinnaker simply because of the name, however I have yet to find one I really like.

·

The highly domed crystal is a big reason for the thickness.

I took pride in the brand when they sponsored the US Womens 49erFX Olympic team, but what connection do they offer other than the brand name "Spinnaker"? I can't figure it out. It's almost as if it was pulled out of a hat. It's not like any watches of theirs are named "Jib Sheet", "Mainsail" "famous sailors name here", or any convenient relatable. 🙄 It's just an advertising fluff brand.

I held a few at the NYC Wind Up fair last year, and they seemed a reasonable quality for the $$, but not great enough to hand over a credit card.

You think the crystal is 6mm tall once it leaves the case, and the case is all of 14mm thick?

Well shit, when you put it that way! I must have missed that picture. But lordy, you know that will jump out of it's way to collide with a door jam lol

If I was a sailor I would want a watch that floats.

·

Im not ever gonna buy this watch but Im glad that it exists. Obviously this was created for those who like overly large pieces and that said even some professionals who actually take their watches to water prefer larger watches so yeah... to each their own. 😉

It's actually inspired by the Rolex Deepsea Special.

Exactly - but let’s get angry anyway…

Deliberately-designed “thick” diver gets called out for being too “thick”. I have no words.
