No regrets but!

Something a bit deep to go with my deep diver watch.

So yesterday I made the biggest purchase of my life that wasn’t a vehicle. I’m a northern British working class man

Image

(Pie chips and peas some stereotypes true but I don’t have a whippet🤣)and we are told not directly but more of a social conditioning from a young age. That this is your lot in life and you don’t deserve or have the right to want more and that!

Wanting more from life is frowned upon and belittled! If you work hard and try and better yourself you are called fake or if you. Work hard and save up your hard earned money and buy something. That is seen as something that is above your class status. A nice car or a fancy watch you are made to feel bad about it “you are just wasting your money” “who you think you are some big shot” basically knows your place

Image

Comedy classic.

They like to drag you down and keep you down no one has ever told me this it’s just something you feel after a lifetime of social conditioning.

So last night I tossed and turned thinking about if I had made the right choice and also feeling guilty about spending such amount of money on a watch! What is crazy it’s my hard earned money that I’ve saved up and sacrificed for and I’m not neglecting any responsibilities to get it and it hasn’t left me penniless. It’s a weird feeling has anyone else felt this way? Or if you are from other countries do you still have a class divide

Give it a few weeks. Nobody will notice your watch or have any idea what you paid.

People spend money on all types of things: houses, boats, hinting, golf, travel, cars, trucks, RVs. You are no different.

·

Enjoy it in good health.

·

I hear you.

I come from a similar working class background.

I'll admit I sometimes feel a huge chip forming on my shoulder when I see people born into a better life than I was dropping serious coin on watches or cars (or whatever). This, despite the fact that based on my job and lifestyle, I'm resolutely middle class these days and have my own nice things.

I'm weak and have issues. I'll try harder. :-)

Thanks I am it’s a bit of random post but I feel better for saying it all and I’m going to wear the hell out of the watch haha

·

As a, “southerner”, I’m troubled by this! The last thing I need is upwardly mobile northerners making the Rolex list longer than it already is!

A nice timex expedition with indi-glow is perfect for, “downt pit”, activities! You don’t need that diver for big snorkelling either! The weight could come in handy if your chasing a cheese though?

Congrats on the purchase 😉

·

I think that I understand perfectly what you are experiencing, I think better than many other members but it is your money, passion, life decisions. You cannot control how other persons think, react to situations and circumstances, that is beyond your control and care. When I was still working the daily grind, I was criticized for all details of my clothing, watches and of course my opinions that was why I made a point of wearing my 48mm Breitling super polished on pro bracelet Super Avenger. It seemed to irritate persons who did not know my name but could not stand me, haha.

·

Stop worrying and losing sleep, it’s your money, your watch and you can do whatever you want with it……. Well within reason 😂😂

Lovely watch though sir👏🏻👏🏻

My favourite colour 💙

As a fellow Northerner, just on the opposite side (Liverpool) I know what you mean. I always feel really guilty because a Watch is not really a necessity it’s an enjoyment thing for me. You’ve got something to enjoy and to show for your hard work. You canny go wrong with Pie and chips neither 👌🏻

Watches can be quite polarizing for no good reasons. I mean a watch is a watch some are cheaper others more expensive. Lool I place all the blame on modern Rolex watches.

·

Yeah, I get ya. Working class Brit here too mate.

I inherited money from my Mum & got my Grail (SM300 heritage) a few years ago. Got talking on a more snobby forum & was told the "appropriate" level of spend is 2.5 months wages 🤯 - a ridiculous arbitrary figure imho....

Needless to say I left the forum, enjoy my pride and joy & haven't looked back!

Enjoy it guilt free, it's a lovely watch mate 😍👍🏻👍🏻

Yeah I take a lot of pride in the fact that every thing I own I’ve worked my ass off to get from my seiko’s to now my Tudor

Your far enough north to know you shouldn't be wearing clothes unless it gets to - 20c 😉

I love both colours. It just so happened the available one in the AD was black so I went with that one. I was looking at the black bay 58 and hadn't considered the Pelagos at all. Then I tried it on and that was that. To scratch the blue pelagos itch I'm after the elusive FXD next!

They had both in but but I’ve already got a lot of black dial watches and I wouldn’t want it to take away from my longines that I’ve not had long

Image

But I do like how tooly the mat black dial looks on the Pelagos

First off congratulations on a fine time piece!! Secondly well done in staying the course and saving up for something. Takes discipline and dedication. Respect mate.

Thanks I would be lying if I said I was saving up for that I’ve always saved money up had I had enough to get it without whipping out all my savings at once but that’s why I save

·
vmiyanks04

Congrats! Wear it in good health! People spend money on $1000 cell phones without batting an eye or calling people out on it. You’re fine. Like you said, as long as you’re not neglecting your responsibilities or it left you penniless, you have nothing to feel bad about. People will always think other people’s purchases are a waste of money if they don’t have the same interests. Don’t let them bully you. That’s a fantastic watch and is something you’ll have for you entire life and can pass it on. That cell phone or TV or other consumable technology you can’t say the same thing about. Cheers!

Thanks yeah all that is true

·
Michael_adventure99

Yeah I spent a some time living in New Zealand I know they are different countries before you get upset 🤣🤣but them seemed to have the same outlook it was really refreshing hopefully I can get over to OZ one day

Yeah, Kiwi's are a strange sort of cousin to us but, by and large, the attitudes are the same.

·

Enjoy it with a clear conscience. I too am a northerner (nice pie by the way!) and have the same pangs when buying……. I never imagined I’d spend ‘in the thousands’ on a watch. My dad (rest his soul) mocked me for spending £300 on a Seiko back in 1999 so he’d be lost for words at my latest purchase (Sinn U1).

I know what my bank account holds and how hard I worked to put it there. I never leave the account destitute, and always have the money in place (rather than buying on credit) and it therefore sits well once I’ve committed.

Just enjoy it - and as somene once told me,’If you’re not saving for something, what are you saving for?’

Or a brief moment of duality in an eternal now of unicity and expansive all :)

I once heard that if someone tells you "Hey, nice suit" in UK, it means you are dressed like a peacock.) Dunno if it's true, but pretty much lines up with your post.

We don't have that much of a shame towards other people spending habits, but people might think that you either spending your father's money, or that you made your money on shady stuff. It's common amongst older folks.

My generation and younger people might see flashy watch as a 'bad taste'. I notice an appreciation for a minimalist/bauhaus aesthetic, and also people are really into vintage aesthetic and 'comfy' aesthetic. Overall, I really see the more 'artistic' approach to dressing up among people around my age and younger, and big golden brick on a wrist didn't quite match the vibe. You might get mocked for wearing a gold brick on a wrist, or wearing a lot of flashy big logos on you.

As for luxury items, most people of my age appreciate niche items, but not 'just expensive' stuff. Something from a smaller or independent brand, for example - Acne Studios over something like Gucci. And the most cool thing is to get something expensive for relatively cheap on second-hand market. Used market is booming. To be fair, I get most of my stuff used, starting from audio gear and ending with clothes. I would go on a marketplace before considering buying new.

It wasn't always like that, I guess 10-15 years ago, the overall narrative was 'don't stand out', 'keep away from any trouble', 'don't take any risks', etc. It was mostly pushed by our parents and grandparents, because standing out was the sure way to get you in a huge trouble in Soviet Union. Now it's really different. Generally nobody gives a crap, if you are not behaving like a douchebag, like driving expensive car without respect to other drivers, slamming awful rap music on full blast out of the window, or showing bad attitude towards servers/bartenders/etc, like you own the place. But I guess it's not specific to our culture, rather a common dislike towards douchebags.

Owning luxury items, spending money on luxury items or having a taste for finer things, those things are not gonna be shamed, but you will be shamed for thinking you better than others because of your consumption habits.

Wanting more from life is frowned upon and belittled! If you work hard and try and better yourself you are called fake or if you. Work hard and save up your hard earned money and buy something. That is seen as something that is above your class status.

From my experience - people are usually rooting for the simple, hard working 'average Joe and Jane'. Of course you'll meet people who are gonna be envious or just straight up bitter, who are gonna try to take you down, because they never ever tried to work bit harder and thinking that the world owes them something. But non-toxic people will root for your success. Just don't behave like a douchebag.

El Salvador is pretty much the same, we don’t have racial discrimination like they do in Guatemala, but social class is a solid divider here. I think it’s a load of rubbish and people should be allowed to enjoy what brings them joy! So wear it proudly! The blue one is the best of the OG pelagos in my opinion!

PS you should reconsider a whippet! They’re smart and fun!
