One Year Gone

This wasn't my Dad's watch but it's very similar to one he wore most of my childhood. He bought it for me off eBay when I got into watches shortly after graduating college. He used to get dressed up in his business clothes and his Girard Perregaux Gyromatic dress watch every day and drive to the printing business he owned. When he got there the first thing he did was take off the watch, respectfully put it in his desk draw, and change into his work clothes to run the printing presses himself. If he had a delivery that day he'd change back to business clothes, put the GP back on, drive to the customer, drop off the delivery at their dock, and go into the office of the customer to have a quick chat and thank them for the business. Anytime watches came up regardless of what they were wearing on their wrist he'd proudly show them his Gyromatic and tell them how in its day this watch had been more prestigious than a Rolex. When I was young I never understood changing clothes back and forth multiple times of day. Now I get it. For him it was a point of pride. He was a business owner, just like our customers and took pride in himself. He wanted to be seen as their equal, even if they were many times wealthier than our family. It also symbolizes how hard he worked. He was not only the business owner but was the person who did the physical work too. He worked as hard as a middle class man and working class man put together. He passed away about a year ago but not before I got to show him the Omega Seamaster 300 Heritage in Blue that I bought and paid for in cash from my savings. He always wanted his sons to be more successful than him and even though he had problems communicating because of a stroke and dimentia I know he was proud of me. Rest In peace Dad.

Fabulous story. The respect and admiration you have for that man is very real to see. He sounded like a hard hard worker, who was very proud of what he did. Thank you for sharing. You're doing him very proud, dude.

Lovely post, brother. Your father sounds like a good man. Wear the GP and think of him at each glance.

Awesome watch, awesome story.

Beautiful story along with the 2 watches that accompany it 🤍

·

Thank you for sharing. Don't ever get rid of that watch. More valuable than any other you could buy.

·

Both great watches

In the Middle East we say something that roughly translates to, may you live on and remember. What a great memory.

I wish I could remember the type of watch my granddad wore, thinking it was a citizen. Back in the early 80s I remember him wearing his only watch daily. Even if it stopped working its something I would've held onto. Congratulations on both watches and the memories attached.
