Vostok joke of the Day

How do you tell a genuine Vostok Komandirskie from a Chinese made fake Vostok Komandirskie?

The fake will work and keep accurate time.

But I enjoy my Vostoks as long as you know what you’re getting into they provide a great alternative to just being the “What watch should I wear today?” guy to the “I think I’ll swap bezels on these two Vostoks so I can tell that gal at the end of the bar I’m a Horologist” guy. And every morning is like Christmas, “Wow this Komandirskie is fast by 17 minutes overnight, thank God it’s a genuine and not a fake!” And so worth it.

Nice variety in a 3 watch collection! Lovely troika of Vostoks.

Unless you have a timegrapher.

It may cost as much as a scubadude, but think of all the time you will save not having to reset your Vostoks.

But to me that is part of the allure, the connection, a purpose. But that’s me, I’m that guy that had everything I wanted, freak accident 3 years ago, pronounced dead, power of attorney, you can guess the rest, Rolex, Omega, Tag, Breitling I had them all. I come out of my injuries and all gone and can’t afford a Timex. Family, friends scattered. And no connection to anything or anybody, and we humans need connection. Sorry to bore you but know this, next time you think you’re having a bad day? You’re not. Thought about getting a timegrapher, and just read those phone apps to measure watch accuracy? May be an issue with the phone magnetic field and the watch. Who knows, thanks for advice!

Wait, there’s a fake Vostok?

·

I’ve got jokes for this bht they’re inappropriate so I’ll keep them to myself 🤣😂🤪

I get asked, “Why would the Chinese fake a watch you can purchase new for $60? Doesn’t make sense!” It does if you can make that watch at a cost of $15 and sell it for $50. And that’s exactly what they do.

SpeckTator, if you hire a lady of the evening and she charges by the hour and you notice she’s wearing a Vostok, you’re either going to get ripped off or have a enjoyable evening at half price.

How do I tell the difference between the real deal and a fake? There has to be some way other than time accuracy. The craftsmanship of the both are one in the same.

I have seen one or maybe two on eBay. If one crops up again I'll save a pic and post it up. I suppose Vostok fans might buy them as a novelty.

Those are beautiful watches! Such character.

And does accuracy really matter so much these days? We all have a phone.

First thing I look at when checking a Vostok for authenticity is the case back. Then I simply Google that particular model and look for it on Amazon, Meramon, Vostok Watch store etc. anywhere that sells authentic Vostoks. Crown position, date, face numbers, lume, position of Vostok “B” logo, the design on the face, Red Star, does it all match? Forget the bezel most changed out. But at the price point this is a tough one, sure nobody wants a replica instead of the real thing but what is the worse thing that could happen? Your money goes to China instead of Russia? At this point start with Do I like the watch? then worry about the other stuff later, it’s just that, stuff. Unfortunately we are edging to the point where if you refuse to buy a watch because of replicas then you may never purchase one again. Do what you feel like doing and the rest will sort out.

I like to tinker with stuff, whether cars, bikes or mechanical watches (which are also just machines with moving parts).

I am not at the stage where I can pull apart a watch and put it back together like I would a bike, but I can at least get it running better.

For example, my recently aquired Dniepr-Vostok came to me running like this:

I do not know if that is how it left Ukraine or what might have happened to it during the long trip to the land Downunder, but this is what I had.

It is too cold to work on the bike in the garage so a few hours spent during a blustery winters night later and I now have this:

Like Matthew I have involvement in my watches but my time spent tends to be more concentrated.

I have to admint there is also the satisfaction of getting better numbers out of an old, strange watch than you would get from a new out-of-the-box Japanese watch costing five times as much.

In my accident I lost my sense of smell and taste, permanently. Please tell me these Vostok watches smell like Vodka! Thanks.

Only if I have too much vodka and spill it, in which case the screw-down crown may be useful.

Keep up the good work 🙌🏾
