What was your first grail?

Mine was the Omega Speedmaster Professional. I wanted this watch for so long! For what seem like years, I watched every YouTube video, read every article, and looked at every picture on the socials. I was in love. And why not - my profession involved space…rocket launches and satellites.  A friend spend months on the ISS, his Speedy on his wrist as he orbited the Earth. But I needed a special day to commemorate…something to link to what would be my first luxury watch.

And then my son was born - it had to be that. I felt compelled to buy this watch not only for me, but also for him.

So here it sits on my wrist, as I serve an enthusiastic caretaker of his watch. One day, when he’s old enough, I’ll take it off my wrist and give it to him.

Until then, happy SpeedyTuesday!

Cheers #watchfam

PS - when I do pull this off my wrist and give it to him, my wife knows we are headed straight to Omega for another. :)

That watch looks like it was made for your wrist!  Omega has always treated me with such kindness, whether in the boutique or over email.  I've got a good decade before a grail is in the cards, but the Constellation Globemaster in white is definitely the one.  If I'm going to buy a Swiss watch, it has to be something that makes me say "wow, I feel like I've made it" when I look down at my wrist, and that watch fits the bill to a tee.

Wear your grail in good health!

My grail is/was also the Speedy.  Almost 10 years of obsession but I could never bring myself to pull the trigger because (i) the protruding end links on the 1861 models felt too much for my skinny wrists and (ii) I knew the non-hacking seconds was going to drive me crazy.

Despite all that, I told my wife 3 years ago that I am willing to forego all Father's Day, birthday, and Christmas presents until my birthday in 2021 in exchange for a Speedy.  Wife agreed and said she would start saving up.

Luckily for me, 2021 brought the 3861 update to the Speedmaster Professional which resolved all the issues I had with the model.  The 3861 Speedy Sapphire Sandwich turned out to be the perfect present to celebrate a milestone birthday and a new job.  On the other hand, had I bought the watch back when I first started lusting after it, we would have paid about 1/2 of what it's selling for today.

Constellation Globemasters are pure class (especially the blue dial one in my opinion).  Definitely a watch to aspire to.

Thank you!  And I agree, Omega has always been so good to me.  I purchased my Speedy, and most recently my blue-dial AquaTerra from the same gentleman at a boutique in SoCal.

The Globemaster is such an amazing piece! If you follow Watch Andrew on IG, he has one and raves about it.  His pics are great, but he has a killer YT channel where he talks about his Globemaster.  I have to be honest, when I sat to purchase my AT, I tried on the Globemaster, and it was STUNNING.

Cheers my friend!

What a great story!  The 3861 is amazing.  What a way to celebrate a birthday and a professional milestone.  Well done, Sir!

I hear you on the non-hacking seconds. I'm THAT guy....the one who calls the US Naval Observatory Master Clock number every morning to hack whatever watch I'm wearing.  Perhaps it was all the research leading up to the purchase, but I just accepted the non-hacking on this one.  I'm a stickler for my others...something about hacking on the 0 before starting your day.  It's routine for me.  But with the Speedy, she gets the pass.  :)

Thanks for sharing your story!

TIL there is a number to call that I can hack my watch to… ❤

When I was a teenager and mainly because of watching a lot of motorsports I have become obsessed with the idea of owning a TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph. I cannot remember particular models though...

Seeing as I am a young man, probably one of the youngest on this site, with a very limited budget, I decided my grail watch would be the AP Panda Royal Oak Chronograph. (Sarcasm) I can dream lol 😂

I get it!  My two current faves are in the $40-50k range, considerably out of my budget.  But in my opinion, that’s what a grail is all about!! Cheers!

My first grail was a fully-specked flieger type B, close to the original design, otherwise not bothered with the brand. I got myself a Hruodland with a pt5000 movement - excellent piece.

Next on my radar is a nice GMT toolwatch, liking the looks of the Sinn 717 and the Belisar from Union Glashütte. I won't easily commit to spending 4 figures on a watch; the Sinn is just too dear for me, but the Belisar I might fall for eventually,

My first grail was the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean, the orange one. Big, bold and orange. Still love it. Found out about the hate for the helium valve afterwards. And to be honest, thats one thing that makes me like it even more 😉

That’s an incredible watch!  And I love your perspective… wear what you like!!  I’ve not heard of the escape valve hate before - what’s that all about?  Is it uncomfortable, or do they not like the aesthetic?

Great selection!  I am also interested in adding a GMT, and Sinn does it so well. Good luck!  Let me know what / when you decide!

It’s all about the aesthetics. And i guess Rolex fans prefer their solution. Personally i think it makes it stand out as a “proper” diver….. Wears like a champ.

What a great looking piece!  I've always liked Cartier - especially the Tank - for both me and my wife.  However, the more I see the Santos, the more appealing it becomes.  Great selection!

My first grail was the Omega de Ville Prestige. Wanted to have a dress watch in gold and silver colours. This one was a great occassion, so I bought it ... I still have it in my collection and think it will not leave it.
