Back and better than ever, we return to a once glorious collection of posts. Yes, that is right, everyone, The Cool Wall of Watches has returned, and it bears on the affordable end of the market.
But good luck still getting one of these puppies. I'll argue that the watch in question today was the affordable watch of the year 2022. The watch world went nuts; even the average population that has not YET been afflicted with Watchcollectivitus found themselves stricken and smitten by what this watch could mean.
The firestorm has died out some since then, but it is still tricky in some cities to walk in and just buy one of these. It is surprising seeing the plethora of mixed reviews over the long term.
Are they cool? weeeeellll, Maybe. I mean, they are cool enough for freakin James Bond!

But some models are still selling at a ridiculous markup for what is essentially a plastic quartz swatch.
So, my dear Crunchers, what do we think? How cool is The Omega Moonswatch?
This Swatch is the water one.. must be a relative of the Earth Moonswatch selling at Joma for $135.00. clearly a better value.
Iโll admit to being into these when they first came out but thatโs waned now and Iโm glad now that I couldnโt get my hands on one. Maybe the hard to get factor increases the coolness factor for some but personally if something is too hard to get I loose interest and it drops in my coolness rating.
Also can you class it as the top affordable watch if you need to travel quite a bit to get your hands on one? Or pay a huge markup? I think youโd be better off going with @OldSnafu โs choice. Or something like the Seiko Speedtimer, which unless youโre lucky might still be cheaper than a Moonswatch.
Yes I was one of those who queued on 24/3/22๐. I didnโt get one that day (was about no.300 in a queue of 2k+) it was actually fun (yes I know - not everyoneโs idea of fun๐) to be part of what was until then unprecedented in the watch collecting world. Since then I have been lucky to buy many times from the store, since I live only minutes away from it. Love it or hate it, we canโt deny it was a phenomenon for the watch collecting world. I know many people who have never been interested in watches ending up buying one, and many of my friends who have never heard of the Moonwatch now wanting the OG Speedy. My local Omega contact tells me they now have a waitlist for their regular Moonwatch.
Ed White v MoonSwatch!
I have nothing against quartz watches, there are many in my collection. Also, although I don't own any, in principle I have nothing against plastic watches. Many of you own G-Shocks which are plastic. Marathon, Timex, Casio, Protek, and others make composite watches which are also essentially plastic. My problem with the Moonswatch is that it's a bastardized version of an Icon. You don't put a 4 cylinder in a Ferrari - they shouldn't have made an Omega Speedtimer out of plastic.

As a passionate collector of several Moonwatches I am just as proud of my MoonSwatches. I donโt think anyone wearing a MoonSwatch thinks they are actually wearing the OG Moonwatch, and I donโt begrudge MoonSwatch owners who want to share in the Speedy ownership and heritage experience. Although similar in design, they actually present different wearing experiences but somehow the MoonSwatch still manages to create that same thrill. I have as big a smile wearing my Mercury/Mars as I do with with my cal.321 or 3861.
More power to you. I certainly didn't intend to criticize your watches. I love Vostoks and many collectors laugh at them. I don't own either Omega actually, so I'm just shouting from the bleachers.

No problem, no offence taken๐.
" either Omega ..." I think that's the point: it's not an Omega; it's a Swatch (collaboration with Omega) - you can't buy it at Omega, only at Swatch because it's a swatch. It doesn't have the quality nor the level of horology of any Omega. Anyway, it's created a level of discussion and debate among collectors and non-collectors alike that has not been seen with any other watch in recent memory, so love it or loathe it, that in itself, is worthy of recognition! Enjoy your Vostoks!
