Love for Seiko SKX013; Hate for Original Strap!

Anyone else absolutely hate cheap rubber or polymer straps? I recently added a Seiko SKX013 back into my collection and fell in love with it all over again, all except for the original strap. It is absolutely horrible and already started splitting.

As much as I hate this strap. I must say that I really like the softer Seiko rubber straps, like the one on my Seiko SNJ025 "Arnie." So, I started looking and got lucky; I found a soft replacement Seiko strap.

So now my SKX013 is on a strap for a Prospex model, and it is so much more comfortable now. I am thinking I may mod this watch even more. If I were to replace the 7S26 movement with a 4R36 movement, and replace the Hardlex with sapphire, I would have myself an SK-ProspeX-013. 🤣

The thing about Seiko watches is that they need to be modded to be good. New strap and sapphire crystal to start with. Long Island watch makes a better Seiko than Seiko corp.

Uncle Seiko makes very good GL831's (upgraded modern take on the classic Seiko) in a multitude of colors.

Hardlex isn't sapphire no, but there was a poll not long ago where someone asked if they'd actually seen a gouged or roughed up Hardlex. There was a few, but more No's..but Marc at Long Island does make a good watch.

Maybe I'll just replace the 7S26 movement with an NH36 and leave the Hardlex. After all, my SNJ025 Arnie has Hardlex and I haven't had any scratches or gouges in it in the four years I have had it.

I hate cheap straps in general. A cheap bracelet is arguably worse. However, management (the angel on my shoulder) told me that they have to stay for financial reasons.

Thanks for sharing

Enjoy it.

Oh that strap. I like that one

·

go to holben fine watch straps there is one of the brands they carry an Italian RUBBER STRAP MANUFACUTURER GREAT STRAPS AT A FAIR PRICE

·

This is the main reason I'm not into G-shocks or cheap digital Casios with rubber bands. The only option for me if I'll buy one is changing the strap to a Nato one, but this could be more expensive than the watch itself. With expensive watches like Seiko divers, I think the stock strap/bracelet is not so important, and it's ok that you have to replace it.

·

You could always swap it out for a NATO strap, can never go wrong with them

The Hardlex on my Arnie was scratched within a month of owning it. And in the worst possible place - a prominent scratch of the crystal over the little digital display. Actually makes it a bit harder to read. Bad luck on my part.

I was about to invade the comments to defend the honor of the cheap Seiko jubilee when I realized this was about the rubbber strap.

People really forget how cheap “old” Seiko was and that “new” Seiko is really better in almost every way except for price; because Seiko was too cheap to make accuracy improvements to justify the higher prices.

My SKX007j’s OEM plastic strap is rough.I should swap to Barton strap.Like I usually do when I need a nice rubber strap.Nice 13.

Yes, it sucks because they put a regular 6R movement that hasn’t been regulated (and has a wide accuracy tolerance), which is unacceptable for the money they are charging.

If that watch was running even +/- 10 seconds, it would be a much better watch and Seiko’s price increases would be much more justified.

I totally agree with you,I’ve.had mine for a few months now. This is the second time it’s out for repair.Don’t have any issues with my other seikos.

Nice find bro. Have you consider a NATO strap or you're going rubber all the way?

Love to see the modded watch with all the bells and whistle you mentioned. 🍻

Since I got this nicer Prospex rubber strap, I really don't want another strap for my SKX This strap for the SPD models is super soft and really comfortable!

The only other mods I am considering are putting a 4R36/NH36 movement in and replacing the Hardlex with sapphire. It would look the same, but have the hacking and sapphire of all the homages like the first Islander watches. Sort of a sleeper hot rod SKX. 🤣

Love the smaller size of the SKX013 and wish that Seiko hadn't discontinued that model.
