Cartier Tank Must XL for casual wear?

I recently went into the boutique to compare the medium and large Santos de Cartier. I noticed the Tank XL on bracelet and tried it on; I was surprised how much I liked it. The dial is very appealing in person and for me it did not wear as large as a expected.

I am torn between the Tank and the Santos. The things I like about the Santos are the bracelet and water resistance and the “sportier” look. Aside from the bracelet, if I had to be honest with myself, I think I am more drawn to the look of the Tank XL over the Santos.

My question is about pairing with more casual wear. I wear a suit maybe twice a year, and dont really wear button up shirts that often. Would the Tank XL on bracelet work more casually? I am a guy in my early 40s living in Los Angeles, if that helps at all. Thanks for your thoughts!

The Tank looks great with casual wear. I'd just be scared to be casual with a $5K+ (usually a lot ++++) watch.

I personally don't care for the looks of the Santos - other brands do Sport better. But the Tank is timeless.

" living in Los Angeles" as a visitor to LA (the food is ridiculously good out there) the watch game is strong out there. You can totally wear that watch casually imo.

Be careful with any dress looking watch in LA. All cities have an inherent risk of theft but CA cities are currently a little more likely to experience watch theft, and Cartier is a well know luxury brand. That being said, the Tank XL is a perfect choice for causal and dress wear. My previous boss has a tank and it is great on casual fridays and on important meeting days. It’s a great choice!

The tank looks good in just about any situation.

The food is definitely good out here =).

I wear a tank large casually all time - it’s brilliant.

You can’t go wrong with either.

Another interesting option is the new francaise - it’s beautiful and sporty. Similar to the Uber cool new tank normale. And it’s got a way nicer bracelet than the tank Must.

Cartier sizes are like french clothing sizes. The XL ist not an extra large watch by the standard of other brands.

I own the Must XL and it is simply amazing. The dial as you mentioned is just stunning. I prefer is vastly over the previous Solo XL's white dial.

I wear a suit maybe 2 times a month for work. It does not stop me from wearing the Tank constantly with more casual outfits. Not with shorts and t-shirts, but my standard look is an Oxford shirt and dark jeans. I feel it works perfectly and slightly elevates this more casual style.

If you have not checked out the video by you're terrific on YouTube I suggest you do. He also pairs it with more casual styles.

I posted this picture before on the forum, but here is my tank with a striped Oxford and a khaki field jacket:

This guy used to rock the tank with a T-shirt. If it worked for him…

I guess you could and it would look alright, of you like it then do it but I think that's more Santos territory... just my opinion though.

Whichever way you go, make sure you are happy in the end and get rid of all the doubts first. Asking a question on a forum is a form of doubt. Maybe get a 30$ rectangular Seiko or whatever copy brand (make sure the size is similar, tanks vary hugely in size) from eBay for a trial run?

I wear my Tank XL casually on the bracelet all the time. I never wear a suit. I’m always in jeans and a T-shirt and the XL looks awesome, IMHO. I think the XL is the perfect combo of traditional style with modern size.

The Francaise is a nice one too but for me it just feels a little too fancy but I agree with you, better bracelet than the standard tank!

But who doesn’t want to be fancy!

The Tank will certainly look great with casual attire! Here’s a shot of my Basculante with casual clothes :)
