First big purchase. Daydate or Breguet Tradition ?

Hi Watchcrunchers,

im a 29 year old guy working in investment banking in Munich, looking for the right first big purchase for my birthday. I have been eyeing a YG Day-Date (18238) for some time, however its a bit too flashy as a daily wearer, since im the early stage of my career.

Buying a less flashy steel or white gold watch would be a rather rational decision, but as i still want something with a bit of punch and recognition, ive been thinking to get a white gold Day-Date (18239) or a Breguet Tradition (7027/7037).

I feel like a day date is always best in yellow gold and white gold feels like a compromise, while Breguet Tradition to me has the right wow factor but a brand of that only watch guys appreciate (its swatch group though).

Any opinions on what would be the right daily-wearer?? Many Thanks in advance.

Day date for me

You can't go wrong with a Day-Date. Classic, simple, easy to wear daily and will never go out of style. Good luck with your decision. Stay Thirsty My Friend 🍻👊🏽

Thanks for your comment.

Im only in doubt because i own a steel datejust and a WG day date 18239 looks almost identical and kind of fits the same purpose. Lets see :)

"Texas Timex" all the way!

Sounds like you're weighing up whether you want something for yourself or for others to notice. As you already have something others will know, maybe buy something you want for yourself.

Thank you for your comment. You are not entirely wrong. Im in a highly competitive field and for a big first purchase, i want it to be something that symbolizes my achievement, without being too “in your face”. And yet, horology and value-to-money is also of relevance. Its a difficult one.

Very few people will notice the difference between a steel date just and a WG day date.

I recently picked up a 18238 and definitey feel that it's a bit on the flashy side. One of the biggest issues I have with it is legibility, as the hands tend to blend into the champagne dial.

White gold Day Date is my dream watch pull the trigger

I've no first- hand experience with Breguet or with the Day-Date, although first had experience with Rolex. So, I'd say as a daily wear Rolex is hard to beat. But as a watch enthusiast, the Breguet Tradition makes the Rolex Day-Date look rather pedestrian.

Either way, let us know what you decide and pics when you get it!

Buy them both. Be a great starting collection.

Day-Date

Buy one today and then buy the other for Christmas. One for you and one for them.

Right. It’s like blondes or brunettes. The answer is always both.
