I'm not really much of a Rolex guy. I lusted after an Explorer 1 for so long when I first got into the hobby, but after trying one on in the store I was left rather underwhelmed by the watch and it killed my desire for one. All that said, I do still consider a birth year Air King which would be the 14000 model shown here. I prefer the straight indices pictured here, but for anyone interested they did make this 14000 Air King with a 3-6-9 dial that's reminiscent of the Explorer 1.
Not a fan of the brand but lately did arrive at a watch epiphany of sorts: noticed the 36mm Rolex Datejust watches that my nephews were wearing when I attended a grandniece’s wedding a few summers ago, thought they were much nicer than when I gifted them the same Rolexes when they attended my wedding in 1986. A few months ago met a gent from Singapore who was wearing a lovely white gold and steel Datejust that was mesmerizing to me a non Rolex fan. The commonality of the Rolex watches were that none were current all manufactured from decades ago. I have discovered that all watches have the potential to grow old becoming more beautiful in the process.
You hit the nail on the head with Explorer I and the Air King…but thanks to the internet, the under-the-radar status is withering the way. Mind you, my reference point goes back over 10 years ago when I purchased my first Explorer
I’d go with the Explorer 1. That’s coming from someone that owned and sold an Air King (see image) after a few years. Although I think the Air King is a beautiful watch — it just didn’t click with me.

Explorer 1 is everyone's favourite Rolex , isn't it?! 😍👍🏻
Airking with the flat blue dial 👌perfect undercover rolex
Explorer 1. I prefer black dials.
Hands down airking. If i had money for a nice roley I would do it but sadly ya boi broker than shattered glass 😭😭
Two beauties 👌 very subtle, yet they ooze style and quality. For me the Explorer 1 is the favourite and hope to add one to my collection one day.
That Air King is lovely 😍

Air King!
I love the modern explorer, but that airking is lovely and is the best of those two watches 😍

Vintage Airking 👍
The Explorer! Is that of 36 39 or 40?
Two great watches here. I have a OP 41 that I guess is pretty similar to both of these watches. Out of these I’d go with the explorer 1
At a glance they both look like OPs, which in my experience are the most common Rolex 😂

Both are beautiful #rolexes but I choose the Explorer. Nice watches! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
The Explorer! 🤩 Thats my GADA watch. If I ever get a chance to buy one (for me it cost a lot of money) I will buy it and be SO happy 😊👍🏻

Definitely not
