Well that was quick

I had it in my cart, was going to pull the trigger, the handmade sunburst dial, and then... the stupid captcha popped up out of nowhere asking me to verify that I am indeed a human that was about to buy a $6000 anOrdain watch... and then, poof, it was gone...just like that.

How many ellipses can I use to show how equally disappointed and relieved I felt in not being able to make a crazy impulsive watch purchase?

Only 25 pieces so I figured it would be tight, but that price tag, I also figured I had a chance to add a second anOrdain to my collection.

What do you guys think of this drop? anOrdain made it pretty far in the microbrand tournament and I guess this shows that they're continuing to increase in popularity.

Indeed.

I thought...okay, I'll be a moron and buy this because my Model 1 (Sellita SW200-1) gets more compliments than my other watches and really brings me a lot of joy when I wear it. But yeah, hype and an edition of 25 is what I can account for the ridic number. Again, I'm relieved I didn't but also not lol

Watches man....watches...😬

This lays out pretty clearly what's unique about this watch and why it costs so much. https://anordain.com/blogs/news/sunburst-dial?mc_cid=cce62aa8f6

I mean in this case don’t think GS comparison is really warranted. Just very, very different watch companies. And I love GS and want an Anordain (but the waitlist situation is ridiculous).

·

The Fabrik collection is on sale now without a waitlist . . . But I’m kind of meh on them since it’s not enamel, so what’s the point? That’s Anordain’s claim to fame.

·

Wow. I think that watch is absolutely KILLER! I understand why they would price it at $6k based on the hand scoring. However, I wish they would use machine scoring - every dial would be the same, but I could live with that - then I'd be happy to pay $4k for the watch!

·

I said similar on @Playboy’s post; Given where their pieces sell in the aftermarket, on top of a labor intensive dial, with a Hodinkee premium, $6k is fair. Not sure I would pay for it, but I would go out of my way to talk to the person who is wearing one.

I’m definitely getting another GS in my collection at some point. I sold my SBGN005 with no regrets but it left me wanting another one.

Can’t disagree. Every YouTube video I watch says that watchmakers are a dying breed and there’s a shortage in general. I just hope some of this revenue will help them staff up appropriately.

That was the same logic for using a Sellita movement in the Model 1 in 2019; so they can retain the hand crafted dials and overall cost down. 6k is a lot, I’m not saying it isn’t “worth it” though.

Yeah, I love that they use Sellita. I don’t want any kind of in-house movement. I want something reliable, proven, and easily serviced with plentiful parts.

I recently turned down the Atelier Wen Perception, in spite of its phenomenal dial, because it’s some weird Chinese movement. I don’t want a bespoke movement. I want a work horse movement from an independent!

Same and same haha the model 3 has an interesting case and lugs. The purple dial is a GMT too I believe!

It is a cool looking watch but I can't see the price. Manual labour (which I personally believe to be overrated) or not.

They are basically asking 5000$ for a dial... even if takes a special breed of Scottish elves to make that dial, sorry, it's still too expensive.

But then again supply, demand and hype ... can't say I blame them and evidently they sell so if anything it was too cheap.

·

Genuinely curious, what do you propose they do? The aftermarket on many of their existing watches, which cost less to produce than this one, is currently fetching over $5k. These ones would likely command a premium over those. If the market is telling them their watches are currently worth $5k-6K, whether you agree or not, they should charge accordingly. Why let flippers net the profit? I am not saying I think there is $6k worth of watch here, but if I were running the ship there, I cannot say I would do a thing different.

·

As I stated, I am not saying they are worth $6k, but if their regular watches are commanding close to that and this batch sold out in seconds, the market, not me, says they are worth it. My take is pretty easy, let the manufacturers make and distribute the watches at the prices they want and the market will decide if they are worth it or not. For every AP, there are countless brands that sell with a deep discount off MSRP (Hublot, Tag, IWC, etc). Basic economics, whether I agree with the market or not.

·

I get it, we all have our take. You mentioned it was "not fair in any way, shape or form." I asked what you would do to fix it. It was not a point of argument but one of honest discourse on a solution as to what would make it fair if you were in their shoes.

·

Whether it's worth $6k to any one person is of course purely subjective, it would not go on my personal wish list. Without knowing how long a normal dial takes and taking them at their word that it takes 100hrs to make one of these, even if it's as little as three normal dials in the time it takes to make one of these, the pricing doesn't seem unreasonable. The dial is the most labor-intensive and expensive part of the watch and is the limiting factor in their overall production. Seeing that a normal fume would sell for a bit under half or this, I can't see much reason to think it's a relatively bad deal. Of course, this assumes that you think the going rate for the standard version is reasonable as well.

·

Hmm.. reminds me of independent watchmakers making 2-3 watches by hand a year but charging 100-500 k each, mostly depending on materials they use. That's exclusivity for you.. so 6k for each of 25 pieces does seems a little bit reasonable from that perspective, particularly if you really love that dial...
