NWA! Seiko Goldfeather 🪶

I never bought any vintage watch so after not so careful consideration, I decided to bid for this 1960s Goldfeather in an auction on Buyee. I bought it for $130 USD, excluding the high $30 USD shipping cost. I don't expect that much from it, it's evident that it's a watch that has been worn heavily and I won't be heartbroken if it stops working anytime soon.

It's not surprising that the watch is very worn out given its age and the low price I pad for it. The gold has dulled. The top right lug has somehow bent inwards. The letters are fainting. It hasn't been serviced. And that strap is in tatters, but that can be easily replaced.

What throws me off the most is the crystal which looks like it has wrinkles all throughout the centre. I'm going to try and polish it soon so I can slap a new strap on it and wear it. But overall, as always, I'm happy with it 😊

That’s a great find 👍🏻! You could check with a local watchmaker what he charges for a service…but if it’s more than the watch is worth I understand if you just wear it and see how long it lasts :)

I have many vintage watches… that plexi won’t polish out, as the ‘crazing’ is probably too deep.

Polywatch will help… but you should be able to find a replacement relatively cheap.

Personally…I prefer to keep it original but… the crazing can let moisture in, so be extra careful near water! 😬👍🏼

Thanks for the info and advice! I'll definitely use polywatch to increase legibility, and that might just be the only thing I do to it (other than change the strap) 👍

I'll check, but yes, I never intended to spend too much money on it. I only really bought it to squeeze the remaining juice out of it, and even if it stops ticking, I'll still keep it 👍

Welcome to the world of buying vintage watches particularly online.

My watchmaker sleeps better at night knowing that before too long I will come back to him with starry eyes and another project watch. Where I see plenty of potential he sees piles of profit and his eyes are better than mine. Each successful rejuvenation is marked by several others that are only fit for that sad box at the rear of the closet and will never see the light of day.

Venture down the vintage path if you must but do so warily and with the lowest of expectations.

Beautiful dress watch. Pure elegance.

I have a dozen vintage watches, so good luck. I have purchased some for cheap that run like they are new and some that I paid a good price for and needed some serious attention. For $130, you got yourself a beautiful dress watch. I would see about polishing the crystal, if not, I would think a replacement wouldn't break the bank. I think you have the right plan and should just enjoy it.

These are amazing watches, I have 2 1960 Cronos special dials and a 1960 Lord Marvel special dial. I'm still looking for a Gold feather special dial. They are worth getting serviced! The original crystal's are pretty easy to polish but if you need to replace it. They only run about 30.00

Nice pick up! How do you guys find such deals. Good luck on restoring it to the best that it can.

Someone offered me the new goldfeather that was just announced. I was very tempted until I saw the price! What a beautiful watch and I appreciate it's craftsmanship, but sticker shock.

Dealer doesn't have watch in hand, just a pre sale announcement.

Look at that movement!

Lovely. A big watch for the 60's right?

That crystal - if acrylic/plastic - WILL polish out.

If I can take this:

And turn it into this:

Then you certainly can too.
