My 1st Watch Build Experience

I decided a bit back to give watch building a try. The idea just kind of evolved. I bought a few modded watches and then I found someone to customize a few watches for me. The specs on them were all very good and cost a lot less than what a similar watch of a name brand would have cost. After working with the last modder and selecting what I wanted I just decided to give it a try myself. I started by buying a watch building kit just for making it easier for the 1st one. I then purchased a dial, hands and strap that I preferred and had my own applied logo made. Putting it together was fairly straight forward. Putting on the hands is pretty tricky and took a while. Overall though a good experience and I am very pleased with the results. I definitely see this as something I want to continue to do going forward. I do think it causes me to look at watches a bit differently and adds to my overall watch collecting experience as well as adding a new hobby. 🍻 Happy to hear your comments and if you have made a watch please post a picture below. 🍻

Nice work…kinds of put into perspective how expensive watches really are or not as it were.

Thanks! Definitely the mark up on most watches makes it very profitable.

great job.

I really like the colors. Great job 👏

You did an outstanding job I think. I love the design, hands and strap, all go together like peas in a pod. At a glance I thought "what have GS come up with now"

Thanks Paul! I definitely appreciate even anyone getting a hint that it has a GS vibe. I wore it yesterday and was very pleased with it.

Nice build, that textured dial almost gives me the vibe that the Omega Aqua Terra with Denim Dial has. Pretty amazing indeed. Looking forward to see what you'll do next!

·

Love that dial!

This is really inspiring! I’m a mechanical engineer and I’ve been building cars and motorcycles (for fun) my whole life, and so, I’m really attracted to building my own watch(es).

Yours looks great! Well done 👏👏

·

Was your applied logo done by a jeweler? With a 3D printer? This is an aspect I have been thinking of also.

Thanks so much Mike, I appreciate the kind words! I definitely have some more projects on the table, (literally and figuratively!)

·

I did that dial in a bronze case. Looks beautiful. Not the cheapest dial out there, but a lot better than the cheap dials!

·

I guess this is how microbrands start.

Hi Justin! Thanks for saying nice stuff! This might be something you'd really get into. I used the company called 4Customize.com for my logo and was pleased with my experience with them. I am sure there's a lot of other ways to go though. Please keep me updated on everything, I find it very exciting!

I definitely think it is one way. Currently I don't have those plans. Just another hobby. My goals with it for now is just to be comfortable with experience and be able to elevate with better movements and materials of what I can build. Probably quite a few pretty basic builds before I get to that. The design aspect of it I enjoy very much. Would I ever make watches to sell? I really don't know the answer to that. For now just enjoying this new hobby. 🍻

Nice!I think it would be a thrill to create such one-of-a-kind artisanal works.

Thanks, definitely some satisfaction from this project.

Looks great, out of curiosity how much did it cost to build and what are the specs? (Asking for a friend 🤣)

I can give you a few of the specs now. If there is anything I leave out I can get back to you. NH35 movement 38mm sapphire crystal front/ expidtion caseback (mineral crystal) SS 316L case lug 20mm lug to lug 45.5 thickness 13mm WR 10ATM

My cost that actually went into the watch was roughly $250. The same build would cost me less if I did it again because I wouldn't get a kit.

·

Well that is really impressive and certainly something worth doing. I have been thinking about doing a build project although I have never even opened a watch so I always imagine the second I do lots of gears and springs will go over where 🤣

But given how well yours looks and what can be achieved on a modest budget, I think it's worth taking a punt as that's one hell of a watch and what a great little project

That’s a spiffing build Lincoln! 👏🏻👏🏻

Ain’t it fun well apart from stem cutting and hand setting 🤣😂👍🏻

Good advice! Do you have any companies that you recommend to buy tools and arts from?

And then if I get really good at this is there a some companies you know up that sell more upscale parts? Possibly some places that I could get some things custom made as well? 😁

Yeah it's really nice. I think I enjoy the design part of it the most though and you don't actually have to ever make a watch to do that part of it. 😂
