2nd Watch Build Completed!

Just finished this one today & I wanted to share how it turned out. I am hooked on building watches now. The design process is what I enjoy most but for the 1st beginning 5 or 6 builds it is more about getting experience, confidence, and knowledge. Great new hobby for me that compliments collecting very nicely. Cheers ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Nice work!

I built one using a similar dial about a year and a half ago. I like how yours looks in black. Nice work.

Good work but you really need to lose the OEM logo on an individually built watch. Replace Seiko (which it certainly is not) with your own logo design and all is well.

Otherwise you are building a fake. It matters not that these dials are available from Chinese sites, It doesn't make it right.

With the skills of many "builders" it can't be a big deal to alter the logo from the OEM to something else.

It seems to be pretty much acceptable to build or Mod watches with the Seiko logo as long as it is disclosed and many are made and sold doing this as well. These are made by me for me and I am not trying to pass them off as something they are not. I am fine with it and that's what matters to me but others will have their opinions and they are entitled to them. I do prefer to use my own logo though. I have bought several dials that it was not pictured or disclosed as having the Seiko logo and then what I get shipped has it. ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Nice, I like your hands better. I always forget to take lume shots. I guess because it's not something I really value in a watch. I appreciate that you included a picture of it though because this dial has a very great looking lume. ๐Ÿป

I've been on various watch fora for many years and, to date, this is the only one that has such a loose interpretation of what is fake. I suppose I'm old school and have much less tolerance for fakes than most here but I'm not about to change and will call them out when I see them. I feel that, as a long time enthusiast , I have every right to- despite what the younger modders say. If my opinions on fakes irk some to the point that they feel the need to report me then so be it. But whatever your reason, rationalization, or whatever else makes you feel comfortable making a watch with the OEM logo that is NOT made by the OEM you are still making a fake. Even if you made it for yourself. And simply saying that it's not real doesn't make it right. Maybe the powers that be here should make clear what is, or isn't a fake since fake/counterfeit is one of the reasons listed when a post is reported.

Congratulations on completing your second watch. Good job BTW. I like the look of it.

100% agree.

Fake Seiko is no better or worse than fake Rolex. If Seiko didn't make the dial, you are stealing their trademarked logo/name/design.

Why posting a fake Seiko dial is accepted, is completely beyond me.

Obviously I am new to making watches. But I have spent some considerable time in research and from what I have gathered independently of WatchCrunch but from the watch modding community is that typically Seiko watches are the most common modded watches and that is well understood. Seiko modded watches are bought and sold everyday with the Seiko name on the dial. No one as far as I know is in any legal trouble and as far as I can tell unless someone is outright making an outright copy and/or trying to pass it off and profit as the original it is just a Mod and is perfectly acceptable in society. We probably aren't going to see eye to eye on this one my friend but I do respect your purist point of view even though I don't share it. If you look at a huge part of the whole watch industry most everything is not really very original to begin with. Most parts are made in China. Most moments are made by a few brands and sold to the rest of the companies. Islander (that I love) is mostly just modified, upgraded, and redesigned outdated Seiko models. Technically a watch cannot be a fake if it is not a copy of an authorized watch which it must be according to the definition of a fake watch.

First, let me say that I'm also old school and would never buy a fake watch. If I cannot afford a Rolex I would rather have a cheap quartz.

We all agree that fake watches hurt the industry because (1) Loss of revenue by the manufacturer, (2) Damages the brand's reputation, (3) Loss of trust in the watch industry by consumer who purchased the fake watch. None of that is happening here. Just a guy who likes to tinker with watches bought some parts and put them together. He wants to show what he did to similar enthusiasts. He is not selling the watch as a genuine Seiko. And he is not interested in buying a genuine Seiko. So, no harm is done here.

I'm in the same situation as JazzRanger. I wanted to build a GMT watch using NH34 movement. I ordered all the parts, including dials, so I can build the watch. I ordered two dials that I liked, without the logo. But when I got them, they had Grand Seiko logos. Well, I'm still going to make my watches with those dials. I could go through the return process, and wait another month or so to get new dials, which may or may not have a logo. But I do not want to do this. This watch is for myself, and I'm not going to say that I have a Grand Seiko. Actually, if anyone asks, I will tell them that I build that watch, because I'm more proud that I could build it than if I just bought a real Grand Seiko.

I sent a request in the other day to see if WatchCrunch would consider adding a separate section for watch builders and modding. I haven't heard back yet but I think it would be welcomed.

Looks like I ruffled a few feathers.
