What do you think of the program? Looks like Timex is asking you to send old watches they will recycle into new products or they will refurbish them and resell them. I wonder if you are compensated for the parts or is this just a cheap way for them to get parts and to make money?

This is very puzzling as they are accepting all brands and not offering some meager incentive to purchase a new Timex. I would say this is an ESG rating bumper, but why are they reselling? Exactly how profitable, if at all, can it be to resell (presumably) low-end quartz watches?

I am glad I am not the only one with questions.

This is great! I’m all about saving the environment and recycling/upcycling. I got this watch from my grandpa but the battery died or something.

Image

The hands have stopped and buttons don’t do anything anymore. I couldn’t bring myself to just chuck it out, only for it to live in a landfill. I love that they don’t discriminate and will take any watch, not just Timex! Doesn’t Timex own Rolex, though? Why are their names so similar?

Anyway, I love the idea of this getting upcycled and getting a second life! Can’t wait for this program to begin!

Here. Take it.

I like the recycling idea and all...BTW I also run a recycling system of sort for those old Rolex watches people do not want. Just send me that one and I will make sure it gets recycled 😭

Nice looking watch BTW.

Wow. I haven't heard about this. I'm a bit confused just by what you posted, but is not to sound greedy, but what's in it for the consumer?

You’d do that? That’s very thoughtful! I’ll DM you to get your details! By the way, I don’t care that people say the internet is full of trolls and deceitful scammers. There’s still good people and wonderful acts of kindness like this. So thank you! I promise to pay it forward! 🙂

Nice looking watch BTW.

Yeah, it’s okay, I guess. Kind of an old man watch. Not really my style. I’ve been looking at this cool MVMT. Ever heard of them? They make really good looking watches!

I was thinking the same thing. Sounds to me like Timex is asking for inventory for it used watch department in exchange for you not feeling bad for throwing an old watch away.

Sure have heard of MVMT, I was gifted one. Have not posted pictures of it as I do not want to brag.

One of the things I find interesting is Timex does not have a restoration service that I know of for old Timex watches. I have my grandfathers I would love to have the movement restored on.

·

Good way to get rid of all the broken watches that I don't have the heart to toss and know I'll never get fixed.

Exactly. If you have a service center, keeping them nearer capacity by accepting other brand's items makes sense. This sounds like setting up both a refurb section and a pre-owned web sales department. And mostly they'll be collecting battered fashion watches and the like. Some ulterior motive must be at work, and I don't see eco-boasting accounting for much.

It's possible that this is all set up for the hopes of the occasional "Antiques Roadshow" treasure find. I think of the corny municipalities that did those "gun buy back" programs and crazy people would surrender their antique firearms for, you know, a $25 gift card. But where is the incentive here?

That part is cool.... but if they are not at least giving you credit toward a Timex piece I am not sure of them re-selling what is fixed. If they where being given to a charity or to schools to teach time telling it would be cool.

Yeah, me too, which in my opinion, is not the best marketing plan. Do they think we are not capable of using google if we want to recycle old watches. lol

·

Well, I already promised to send it to @ImNevix and I’m a man of my word. Besides, you expect me to believe you’d trade me something as nice as a DW for my grandpa’s old, crusty and ugly watch? Nice try! I know if it sounds too good to be true it’s a scam. I wasn’t born yesterday, fella.

Ah, you caught me. 🤷‍♂️ lol

·

This post title got me thinking that Timex offered a new service that allows you to send in your watch for rewinding and I thought that it was cool since it could save me the cost of a winder or the hassle of using the crown and turning it manually.

Just using Timex's own terms :)

I just be missing something. I don't see any info on the link about recycling 🤔

I just be missing something. I don't see any info on the link about recycling 🤔

The email subject I got was "Recycled with Care: Timex ReWound" I could not add the email so I put the link to the URL it pointed to. I think the recycling is this part of the description "Send us your pre-loved watches of any brand via free shipping label. Watches will be cleaned, refurbish and available for resale on Timex Rewound or upcycled into new products."

I do not find the communications to be overly clear from Timex thus this thread.

Thanks my friend. It does sound strange though

So strange since Timex does not own manufacturing plants. All their stuff is contracted to third party assembly plants in Asia. I wonder if this is similar to what Patagonia does through worn and wear, a third party resaler that buys back Patagonia clothing, sorts out some pieces for resale and supposedly recycles the rest of the clothing. I tried it once and I was not impressed with the experience.

Also, Timex movement cannot be serviced or should I better say are not worth servicing. Pressed fit movements without any bridges and pivots that spin

On what Timex called VConic escapments; armalloy bearings where the pivots oscillate. The dials don’t lock in place through milled dial feet, but instead clamp to the sides of the movement plate with four bending tabs. All this long talk to say that I don’t understand what Timex is trying to do since their watches are not worth restoring, unless their aim is straight up scrap melt these watches.

Warm fuzzy feeling inside - which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Overall though, I'd be happy to send them any Frankenwatches I've been unfortunate enough to buy that are just taking up space somewhere in some basket or closet.

I'm into warm and fuzzy also, but I find it very cheesy that they are selling the rewound watches on their website.

I agree with you 100%.

UPDATE: Found this on the Timex site and they are selling mildly refurbed watches of all sorts, many kids watches for $20-30, but a few designer items for more. Folks sending in watches get a code for 20% discount on Timex.com.

Most of my nostalgia watches aren’t worth selling though still function. Not that I need 20% discount but seems a good way to keep them out of a landfill.
