Chronographs are just plain cool. Keeping track of time to the second power!

·

Moon phase first and foremost. Digital chronographs are okay and I guess some people bother with the analog ones. The GMT joke has yet to be explained to me.

Apart from date and power reserve, don't have any other complications in my collection. Would you go for an auto or quartz Chrono?

I agree with Moonphase, when done right they look gorgeous on a dial, mechanically impressive and have a certain charm about them.

Chronographs, which I use several times a week, sometimes several times a day. Some are mechanical and some mecaquartz. Pre-covid I kept a spare in the office.

To me GMT is just basic maths, and I have a clock on my desk with dual time subdial for when my son is away in competition or if I've got an international project on the go; if I needed a second timezone watch it would be on a subdial not an extra hand.

Moonphase can be pretty (though most aren't) but I have no need or interest in what it's doing.

I hope I don't derail here, but I'm always curious about people that don't care about the phase of the moon. Do you live in a light-polluted area where the amount of moonlight doesn't affect visibility at night, or do you just not go outside after dark?

I recently downloaded an app onto my smartpocketwatchphone that shows the phase of the moon and times for dusk, dawn, sunrise, sunset, etc. I love it.

None, pref no date too.

There's a torch by the door. If it's dark and I'm walking rather than driving then I pick it up.

For me as well.

A moon phase is doesn’t do anything that you can’t find out from looking at the sky. And I don’t really care if there is a blue moon this month. However, if the moon phase tracked high and low tide, that would be useful. Sign me up. I want one.

Tracking 2 time zones isn’t hard doing math. But the GMT is a cool complication that doesn’t interfere with the dail or the look of the watch to much. Besides I’m lazy. It’s easier to look down at my watch for 2 times than it is to look down see one and do the math.

·

Chronograph, definitely. Despite the small size of my watch collection I already have two, and the watch I have my sights on next is also a chronograph. They both look really cool, and are useful.

Does a watch with a tidal complication exist?

·

Date for sure, because I can never keep track of it. I do like power reserve indicator on an automatic as a sort of activity tracker.

·

Chronograph

A meme

Lunar Phase

The prettiest complication, and it's sole utility is looking pretty.

I lied, it does give you a general idea of how strong the tides are going to be which is kinda handy if you love doing photography by the beach, since the quality of long exposure wave shots is dependent on the strength of the tide, but that's the niche of the niche utility Lunar Phase offers.

GMT

One of the few mechanical complications that actually got to maintain its relevance in an era where a lot of tool complications became relegated from utility to fashion. No diver is going to wear a dive watch over a dive computer, and even if they could, they wouldn't do it with a Rolex that would be too costly to replace, so they'd rather go for Casio that are ISO certified.

GMT though, only got to strengthen its relevance due to the internet and globalization. A game I play has its server in Japan? Set bezel to GMT +8 and I'm synced with their schedule. Traveling from one country to another? 2 crown pushes and you're all set regarding your current timezone. It's amazing how it can also function as a compass, which is amazing when alot of smartwatches can't even reliability do that despite built in GPS capabilities.

Ultimately though, I'm tied on Lunar and GMT, because they're the extremes of opposite functions, Lunar Phase is the prettiest complication, while GMT is the most useful.

Most complications aren’t needed, they’re just nice to have

·

Chronograph was the complication that made me the watch entousiast that I am today.

GMT was always a complication that I find interresting. I have no problem reading 24hrs so for everyday it's fine by me, and in vacation it's nice to be able to track multiple times.

Moonphase is a complication that can look quite nice on expensive watches, but can look terrible on cheaper watches IMO.

·

Unfortunately I don't have any of these complications yet. Unless you count a G-SHOCK 5600 square as a chronograph 😁

Good that I'm not the only one 🤣

I couldn’t choose between Moonphase and Chrono.

GMT! GMT! GMT!

My new Longines Master Collection has a moonphase and whilst I like seeing the moon moving through the aperture day to day, I don't find any use in it. The watch also has a GMT function, as does my Longines Zulu Time and my Farer (plus another 2 watches coming), that I find infinitely useful.

I live in a different time zone to my parents, and have other family in Europe, Singapore and Australia. And then it comes into it's own when travelling to know the current time and also tracking home time. For example with my 1 year old, knowing when he's likely to be tired because he's not adjusted to "holiday time" yet.

The moon phase isn't about knowing the phase of the moon, it's a classic, romantic complication. I love it!

A moonphase exudes elegance when properly executed. It's my favourite complication.

Most complications are practically pretty useless. In the end, it's just down to your aesthetic preferences.
