Watchmaker starter box

As most of you are, I am a huge fan of Wristwatch Revival channel on YouTube. Marshall has a website which sells a watchmaker starter box.

Have any of you had any experience with one of these?

Been thinking for a while would like to understand the watchmaking side of things and this seems like a good place to start.

I’m curious as well if anyone has any experience. Might make for a great Christmas holiday project!

Me too my friend ill take the leap one day,I'd love to have the knowledge and means to build a watch 100% from scratch and learn hand engraving, make a one off piece of art,it's nice to dream big flopped doing my first mod 🙄😂🤣

I'm a big fan of Marshall and his channel too. But if you're a novice, I'd recommend a cheap watchmaker's kit from Amazon or AliExpress (see below) for around £20. Then buy a cheap watch or pocket watch from eBay and practise. You can upgrade later.

Yes, totally agree with this approach. I'm waiting on all the stuff I ordered from AliExpress and my used watch on ebay to start tinkering. In addition to what the starter box has I'd recommend a movement holder, and silicon matt. I also bought a 10x lighted magnifier, similar to a desk lamp. I think there were about 20 things in my order from AliExpress and it was still much less than the starter box. Just my opinion.

The real cheap kits are not worth having. The soft screw drivers round over fast and the plastic holder is too big and not stable. Most of the rest of it are only for bracelet replacement or sizing. Good quality drivers and tweezers are a must along with rodico. Those kits only get you to the movement.

You could also look at Rotate, who provide a basic kit which you'd need to add to, but they have step by step instructions on disassembly and reassembly of a couple of movements, ST6 is one of them.

Difference is, he includes a watch movement to practice on. It's neat but I already have the basic tools I need to practice.

I agree. But I'm glad I didn't invest lots in Horotec and Burgeon because it turns out I don't have the patience for a full movement strip-down. I just like tinkering.

It's great to hear you're getting into another side of the hobby! You'll have a ton of fun servicing. Good luck.

You can buy the same items separately for less on Aliexpress. It will probably be of less quality but if you are just buying for a trial phase then it’s worth saving the money unless you know for sure you want to go all in and will continue studies to ware you will need quality for longevity. Hope this helps.
