Casio AE1200WH-1A Review

Ah yes the Casio Royale, chances are if youre into watches more specifically Casios or twice as likely if you are a Bond-efficinato. I first asked the Question on this community Should I Get The Casio Royale. Overwhelmingly positive responses from people like Chris W., Psylo88, and FromChicagoWithTime. So I decided to take the plunge and get one for myself.

Specs

As you can probably tell I've chosen the metal variant simply because I think it looked that much cooler. It is a 45mm lug to lug (thanks for telling me hidayat.setiaji as I have no way of testing this easily) with a thickness of 12.5 mm and it's honestly quite chunky. It has a nice enough stainless steal bracelet with a clasp and metal feeling case. Doesn't look great but doesn't look horrible either on my 6-6.5 inch wrist. Arguably a little bit too big for my liking which I'll talk about later.

Features

Now as far as watch features go this has quite a few to say the least. So I'm going to put the major ones down which I'd use the most.

  • World Time: you can see multiple timezones from around the world, this is especially useful especially if you are a traveler. And since Im taking a trip to London this is coming in handy.
  • Digital analogue clock: This is really useful for me, cit always is going to be your home time. As I live quite far away from London I'd always know what time it is back home. I know that sounds ridiculous but it's a nice feature in my opinion.
  • 5 Alarms: I'm not too concerned with the 5 alarms but what is nice in my opinion is that you have a countdown timer which is really what I like. As I'm known to take occasional naps when need be as ridiculous as it sounds.
  • Stopwatch: Standard stopwatch but this time it doesn't stop at an hour it can go up to 24 hours.

Now that is a whole wack load of features. Only if Casios had a game like breakout or something, nah im joking its awesome in regards to how much features it has.

Review

I can see why this watch has the appeal that it does. With how many functions it has and the modification community behind it is incredible. It seems solidly built however I got stuck thinking. What's stopping me from getting something like the Casio A700 where it's more than half as thin or even getting the Casio A500 (thanks for bringing it up Psylo88) where it still has a world time feature in a nicer more compact size! This on the other hand is just too thick for my liking. For the right person this is one hell of a steal for the price! I'll be honest I got this watch mainly because it seemed like a cheaper alternative to the Seiko worn by Roger Moore in Octopussy and I loved the film. And it does that job well. What do you think of the Royale? I'd like to hear what you think in the comments below. Don't Loose Track of Time, See ya!

I like it because I like watchs. I'm not much of a Bond aficionado.

I don't find it to be particurly thick at 12.5mm and the resicn case construction makes it seem like I'm not even wearing a watch.

Probably the best bang for the buck watch out there at about 25 bucks. Much cheaper than the hundreds an original Seiko will set you back.

FWIW-the Vario Watch Co. offers leather straps cut specially for the Casio.

That's very good points! I havent been collecting all that much, but I just found this one quite thick for myslef. If it works for you! All the power to you! Yet again Im used to the A700 the thinnest Casio I believe. Which may fog my judgment.

Did you adjust your score? Wasn't it 2.8 just a few minutes ago? 😉 Not that I object; I love my Royale! 😀

I accidentally hit publish a few minutes too early hahah. I meant to change a couple of the scores because it does the average lol

Great job on the review of the Royale. I agree with your scoring except for the sizing, but that is because I don't have to deal with the size issue with a 7 1/2" wrist. 😀

Great acquisition, my friend. Am glad to be a helping hand...

I have this watch and do like it.  Ive modded it and removed the text on the silver portion of the bezel area.  Unfortunately, this doesn't see any wrist time.  For me digital and quartz watches just doesn't do it for me. This to me was the first smartwatch and I'll never wear any of those LOL! Great review! 👊🏽

Hey no worries, I'm glad that you find the watch decent enough when it seems you've got mechanical and or automatics! Those are definitely nice however a little harder for me in my price range (not saying there isnt cheap ones but) , in my eyes they seem a little expensive for the styles I like. . . Its rather to simple of a dial or too complex, little to no inbetween. However once I do find one I like, it seems they pull it off shelves or unfortunately there seems to me to be scalpers. All the power to you!

Hey well thanks for telling me, its honestly a big help when receiving comments like that because if somebody else doesn't know then they now know it too!

I like them, but they are way too big for skinny wrists, a casio w 800h is more or less as big as I can go.

Hmm, that looks tempting as it has the same level of water resistance, knowing Casio's reputation it is probably more than fine with swimming.

I don’t understand the allure of this piece. To each their own I guess haha

Hmm.. I believe allure of this piece is the affordability and the amount of functions it has. If you get anymore functions your probably going to smart watch territory.

my Apple Watch is what got me into “real watches.” love my Casios but the look of this one is something not pleasing to my eye. Haha

The little digital analog clock at the upper left is too small to be of much use (eyesight getting old). And the LCD isn't as crisp as it should be either. Good review. I don't wear mine much, TBH.

I honestly agree with you. Unless your 2 mm away from it, it's really not easy to read. But I think Casio added it for two reasons, a homage to the Seiko, but more importantly to fill the empty space because the world map would probably look too big or too stretched if it went with the width of the watch.

Nice post. The ae1200 is one of my favs. I also own the a500 and a700 but this one sees way more wrist time. I hope one day casio will make a stainless steel version too..😔

In a way I agree with you, a lot of their watches would be pretty cool if they were made of steal, but I'm as well thinking. Would the watches in someway loose their charm?

Good review glad to have this watch in my collection.
