ONE THING LEADS TO ANOTHER!
When I was gifted this Speedmaster in 2019 I knew zilch about watches let alone that there was a watch "community". Researching the Speedy pulled me down the rabbit hole of collecting and I met many other watch lovers in the process.
Many of my watch purchases are a direct result of those interactions. Being able to see and handle a watch before pulling the trigger has now become essential. I probably wouldn't own a Breitling if I hadn't met @SurferJohn or a Bulgari, Junghans, Felca, Zelos, etc if it weren't for meeting other enthusiasts in person.
Before too long I was attending watch gatherings and learning more about wine at wineries, cars at auto musuems, foreign cuisine at restaurants and of course way more about watches.
I was invited into the homes of collectors and was exposed to their other interests which ranged from early phonographs to fine photography.
Wondering if others have expanded their interests as a result of their involvement in the watch community. Did you find other hobbies from Crunchers to compete with your watch fund? Do you own any watches solely because of exposure to other Crunchers?
Shout out to @drcarter13 who turned me on to these sneakers and spurred me into relentlessly hunting down a pair. I idolized "Pistol Pete" Maravich when I was growing up and had no idea these shoes existed until Danilo shared a pic of his. I promised myself I'd cool it this year on watches but nobody said anything about sneakers!
Curious to hear about any new experiences you've had as a result of meeting other Crunchers.
I prefer in person gatherings over social media dialog and have a soft spot for vintage watches.

It's true the trajectory of my watch collecting changed about 20 years ago as a result of the original watch geeks group, and then later Facebook groups. The knowledge sharing and friends made along the way has been incredible.
As you know I have several other long term hobbies that have also benefitted from the same increased collaboration, post Y2K. There has never been a better time to be in a hobby then right now.

Amazing ! The collector disease can have you in multiple rabbit holes. It’s therapeutic for me. Watches and trading cards keep me sane in an insane world

Gifted??? Can I be friends with the same people you are friends with. I have not been to any met ups yet but hope to start soon. I have meet (virtually through WC) many friends so far like @drcarter13 and @SurferJohn. Hopefully I can attend some events in Denver or the ones in Salt Lake hosted by @UnholiestJedi.

Now you've gone and mentioned Gagarin. 👍 I was gifted the Speedy because I'm a space exploration geek and had amassed a large collection of NASA artifacts. 2019 was the 50th Anniversary of the first manned moon landing and that's why my wife gave me the Hesalite Speedmaster.
BTW if you ever travel to Cuba there will be a surprising number of middle aged men named Yuri.

If I had been gifted a guitar in 2019 rather than a Speedmaster perhaps I would now be interacting with other musicians. I can just imagine someone complaining about my guitar being a homage of a Stratocaster.

Thanks D! That pic of yours sent me on a months long journey but we do Love a good hunt. To find a NOS pair that is almost two decades old with tags and original box is pretty incredible. I'd prefer the red stripe version like yours but I couldn't pass up a new pair in my size.
I'm still crazy enough about sneakers to search for other Pistol Pete versions now that you've shown me that they exist.
They were asking $400!!! I ended up not spending a single cent though, I traded two pairs of NOS Star Wars Adidas that I got years ago in a larger auction haul that had belonged to a well known L.A. hedge fund manager.
It's supposed to rain today so I'll have to wait a bit to bust them out but you'll be part of their story when I do. Thanks again for sharing that photo of yours with me! We don't always know how we impact orhers...

I saw that, a very deep purple. My attorney showed me a pic of it but he will have to win a few bucks before we even discuss it. Right now he's wearing a Monaco homage which is good. Keep him hungry!
