Help with racing inspired watches!

Hello, aside from being a watch collector I am a musician. Recently I've been developing a concept album around a grand prix held in 1962 in Puerto Rico, it was the first and as far as i know it was the only F1 race. This album is also a tribute to my dad who loved racing and watches.

I love working on concept albums and i would like to sort of get in the head space or get a bit of creative inspiration from racing inspired watches or actual watches used by race car drivers. I'm interested in anything funky and digital as getting mechanical chronographs now a day is too pricy as far as i know. i know some drivers in the 70s used casio and other digital watches

So what racing inspired watches do you know of that i can buy and daydream about being in a grand prix?

No doubt:

Tag Heuer Monaco

Rolex Daytona

Omega Speedmaster

A honorable mention. Not from racing but Sports in general: Hanhart 417 ES

I have a Dan Henry 1964 with a Aston Martin DB5 on the case back. If you ask normal folks, they would say a Daytona or a Tag.

·

The iconic Tag Monoco

Christopher ward did a C70 Grand Prix Series of 8 watchs.

SUF Helsinki did a colab with Botas

Just a few to start 😄😄😄

There’s the new Tudor Pelagos FXD. Yes, it’s yachting, but does have the Red Bull tie in.

I have this Filippo Loreti Ascari that I'm willing to part with which will not cost much. You can find details on eBay under musca24

Seiko Guigarro (probably mis-spelled) , driving watches designed by a chap who also designed cars and Ducati motorcycles.

·

Not Grand Prix But Chopard have a partnership with the Mille Miglia race and have an entire Motorsport line

Giugiaro. Close enough I'd say.

Vintage Heuer watches or the new glassbox from Tag Heuer is actually really nice looking.

Man, that is one tough race to find much info about. I can only find the top 3 finishers, not a list of all entrants.

I can't find any good pics of him at this particular race, but Dan Gurney was there (finished 3rd in a Porsche 718) and was known for wearing a Rolex pre-Daytona 6234 chrono around that time.

The winner (in the famously rules-bending Zerex Special), Roger Penske, was known for wearing Rolex watches later in his career as a team owner but I have no idea what he would have worn here.

I know Jochin Rindt wasn't there as his career started in 1963 and he didn't marry Nina until 1967 anyways, but the watch she gave her name to - the Universal Geneve Compax 885103 - was introduced in 1962 and Dan Henry makes an homage to it (aptly named 1962) that is reasonably priced.

Well, there's always the Dan Henry 1962 Racing Chronograph...

It doesn't have a modern F1 car on the back but the engraving of the Maserati prototype designed for the 24 hours of Le Mans is quite nice.

For me the tag heuer brand and formula one are one.

Being also passionate about F1, it is also thanks to this that I bought my first serious watch, a Tag Heuer Aquaracer.

Nezumi (Sweden) makes mechaquartz chronographs, and have some watches dedicated to specific drivers.

Enough of the watches. I'm interested in knowing more about the music project. Is this music in the style of '62 era soundtracks?

Its actually a weird one, i play bass but im more of a beatmaker like DJ shadow/Alchemist. Its gonna be a themed album using as close to period correct samples i can use, sprinkeled with a bit of audio clips for a bit of story telling and also using sounds made by cars as percussion.

Ah, sounds interesting! You'll have to post a link when it's done. I'm really into instrumental music from the 60's and movie soundtracks having played in that style of band, but it has always been with the attempt to be as authentic as possible down to the live instruments and recording techniques. Using cars as percussion sounds is a cool idea.

I really like the Yema Rallygraf. Especially the New Rallygraf X Alpine one! World love to own that.

You have given me a new lease on life. I was beginning to feel a bit crazy about purchasing chrono after chrono. Now I know that I'm not alone. BTW, great collection!

Thanks for the kind words...all the best as you continue to add to your collection.

What is your main interest in chronos? Vintage or modern? Mechanical or quartz? All the above?

Thanks for asking. I'm a bit obsessed with racing style chronographs, particularly vintage inspired from the 70s era. I was a teen during that period and my family was involved in racing. Both my father and older brother had chronographs. However, all chronographs interest me. I also prefer quartz chronographs. I'm nervous about the maintenance of mechanical pieces. This works out for me because I'm limited in what I can spend. I made a commitment to my wife to generally remain under 1k. My hobbies include fast vehicles, off roading, shooting, and some fabrication work. When everything is added up I can easily blow our budget if I don't limit myself. That said, I would like to add a Tag Heuer Formula 1 Gulf or a Detroit Watch Company Le Mans Classic Chrono (also Gulf). Perhaps one day. Thanks for sharing your collection with us. You have some really nice pieces.

Have you checked out Kyle's @KyleSchut Straton Watches? Loads of great modern racing chronographs (and some yachting ones) that range across the very affordable to reasonable price range with both quartz and mechanical options.

I have a decent number in the collection and all are very well made...(sorry don't have wrist shots for all of them yet in the database)...
