Another Great Vintage Hamilton Find!

OK, this one is perhaps my best vintage find so far. It was an estate sale on ebay, listed as; "Men's Vintage Hamilton 17-Jewel Swiss Self-Winding (Automatic) Wristwatch. This is a vintage estate timepiece and as such, it is being sold 'as is, as found'." I got it for $150, and it is in almost pristine condition. I have done some research and managed to identify it (Hey, @Aurelian, this one wasn't in the Hamilton Chronicles). It is a 1968 Hamilton Dateline A681, and it really is in great shape. I can't really even see any scratches on the crystal!! I have had it on for a couple of hours now, and it seems to be running just fine.

Great catch that one! 🎉👏

1968 is really the end of the line for Hamilton as an American company. They had bought Buren to make their movements and soon would decamp to Switzerland never to to return. You have the end of an era in American watch manufacturing. By 1970, the only big American brand left was Bulova.

I think that Hamilton was the quintessential American brand in the 20th Century. Their pocket watches were first rate. Their wrist watches had a style that was distinct and always elegant. They experimented with batteries (like Bulova) because they could see that the next innovation was away from mechanical watches. They gave us Pulsar, the watch of the future.

Now, there is an entire generation of watch enthusiasts that only see them as "entry" level Swiss field watches. I love that you can find these in great condition.

Thanks for the great information. This one is really a great addition to my collection, and I have another dress watch now! 😀
