There’s Something about the F-91W

I bought this iconic Casio a couple of years ago because I was ‘influenced’ into believing that like rice, saltines or pinto beans, this watch is a staple fare for anyone who truly calls himself a watch enthusiast.

It’s like our naturally-derived hair gel-wearing friend Mary — there was something about her all of the guys couldn’t grasp that made her so desirable.

Yesterday afternoon, as Apple my Dachshund and I were making our rounds about the block, I looked down to check the time and had a visual epiphany: I like this watch so much because of its subtle but effective red, blue and gold accents. Kind of like a triumphant banner raised and flapping in the wind above a kid’s fort made from lumberyard scrap. “This watch”…I thought…”is iconic for its subtleties.”

Do you consider the F-91W a worthy member of your collection…or is the whole thing a bunch of high-banged hype?

Nah…I don’t care for digital watches. I didn’t care for them back then and I haven’t grown more fond of them over the decades.

Then…you are free from this tether.

I’ll be honest, it’s in the box because I have one, and I have one because it was cheap and disposable and told the time a fair few years back. I don’t even like the colour, but at the time I wasn’t exactly paying attention to style — as long as I knew the time. Everyone loves it in the watch world, so screw it, in the box when I discovered I had a collection/was a collector.

My wife has the electroluminescent upgrade in her collection, and it’s just better. I also don’t like the green on that one.

I have considered buying a posher version — the silver on the mesh perhaps — but do I need it? Not really. I’d sooner have the Casio Royale like my son — but my G-Shock does world time.

There’s a little nostalgia there for it, for me, but not eighties/nineties nostalgia. (That would be a time period covered by my long-lost Casio football timer, and my CMD40, and my Trek Timex)

It is kind of handy if I am banging away with tools and need something I have neither sentimental attachment to, nor qualms about replacing. As a design — it’s not as good as the older version, and is actually a bit crap. The light is terrible. The springbars, aren’t — and seem to be irreplaceable as normal ones now poke out the side. It’s too colourful for my taste. The older version had to be set using the now-missing recessed button in the top right, and now it can be accidentally set because of it being accessible from the mode button. The design is now asymmetrical because of that change, and I don’t like that.

Casio F91W. ‘Issalright. But like certain classic novels, we are taught it’s popular, and liked, and so it is. The Skmei copies are apparently better.

But if we admit that about the venerable F91W, where will it end?

The Sub?

The OP? Datejust?

Anything quartz at all?

(A Tag owner of my acquaintance is currently letting their watch face being eaten away by corrosion, because they haven’t got round to getting it ‘serviced’ when the battery ran out, and won’t even sanction changing a battery themselves. They won’t let me do it either, because they need the water seals done at the same time apparently, and short of seeing if it dies in a bathtub baptism, that’s out of my powers. So the battery will stay there, dead for a few years now. It’s a quartz movement — change the battery people. Change the bloody battery.)

Well said. Yes, this watch holds a pocket-full of faults…but in the end just works. As for the Tag owner, that guy is simply committing watch genocide.

Have this Timex re-issue instead 😀

I can see why taking it for a service is too expensive. But changing the battery — isn’t. Nor are they likely to even get it wet anyway. Ah well.

(The guy is gal. Relative of mine. They also have a dead baby g from the nineties by this point unless they took the battery out. It literally dyed — hairdressing incident.)

I like it. Taking nostalgia, horology, hype, and comparisons away, it’s an amazing little machine with a simple, balanced design, that packs a lot of features and utility into a handy package that costs barely more than a fast food lunch.

I probably like the A168 a bit more, but the F91W deserves its praise in my opinion.

The F91W is the greatest watch ever created

An inexpensive little machine — true that. It is wonderfully slim and lightweight.

·

Love the F91W and love my A158, which I got instead of the former because I prefer metal

·

IMO it’s literally a $12 watch, there is no point in not having one if your into watches. It’s like being a fan of burgers and never trying a McDonald’s $1 cheese burger 💁🏻‍♂️we aren’t saying it’s amazing, just that it is amazing for its price 🤌🏻.

Looks silly on my 19cm wrist. So i have one but aint wearing it. Ever

I love mine.

I'm never in the yard with my John Deere without it. Tough little bastard.

That's a good looking F-91W. But how about that green and yellow John Deere? Is that a new microbrand? That's the most ultimate field watch I've ever seen.

She’s always trying to negotiate a trade — one of her gnawed-plushies for one of my watches! The F-91W is high up her list for sure😸
