I should be happy with my affordable railroad watch.

I’ve been delighted with my Speidel railroad style watch with the Twist-o-Flex bracelet.

I’ve often thought it would be oh-so nice to own a high-grade railroad watch like this beautiful Ball GMT. But, I could never justify the 3K price…nor can I realistically afford such a luxury. I’m just not cut from the same fancy cloth like some of you.

So I will continue to enjoy my Speidel that was just under 100 bucks. It keeps amazing time…and I don’t need to put on my reading glasses to easily see what time it is. Plus, I think it’s great-looking and a joy to wear.

Does anybody really need any more than a reasonable and functional watch like this? Are we really prisoners of our Western mindset to endlessly-amass physical frivolity with no end in sight? After all…we aren’t taking any of this stuff with us when we are dropped into the proverbial pine box.

Your Speidel is most definitely cool. I almost purchased one of the aqua ones. Such a cool historic brand.

I agree that there are so many watches that can address the functional need of keeping time on your wrist especially today when you can find numerous styles and designs for less than $100.

We live in an age of unprecedented wealth.

My daughter reminds me all the time that we aren't taking any of this with us, when she tells me it's nearing the time that I need to divest so she doesn't have to deal with it when I'm gone. 😉

My problem is I'm still a little kid inside...who's brain works like this...

Looks great! I get a lot of enjoyment out of my less expensive watches because they offer so much for such a reasonable cost. I’m loving wearing this today…

That is a good watch to be happy about. At night I have gotten into the habit of changing into white dial watches. My eyes need the help.

I could do with fewer watches but then I would have all of this extra space in my watch boxes.

Remember them as a kid. Wow love that watch. Those bracelets I can remember the Timex back in the day.

Enjoy that watch!

Cheers 🍻

Your white dial watches are amazing. I'm sure your eyes are always delighted.

Your words are prophetic. When I was a kid living in a financially-struggling household, the toys I received as gifts were so special that I can even remember how they smelled. I still have my Big Trak from 1979! I will probably not hold on to anything I own these days because the stuff just isn’t as special.

This is true about the ‘fewer watches’. As for white dials — yes…I too have become a fan in my ever-increasing progress into the twilight.

It's good sometimes to remember the child inside of us.

I remember a number of years ago when my daughter was half the age she is now, I purchased a couple of slot car racing sets so that we could build a large track in the rec room and race the miniature slot cars like my dad and I did when I was her age at the time.

Just like me at that age, her favorite thing was to cause the cars to go flying off the track at high speed crashing into the walls and other things around the room.

Sadly, those tracks are now packed up. Maybe one day when/if she gets married, I'll be bringing them out again to play with grandkids...one can only hope.

None of my watches cost more than USD$50 simply because I have a very tiny budget to play with. Also with a young infant to look after, priorities differ greatly when becoming a parent. But I do not let that deter me from having fun with my watches, and loving them for what they are. It is also reassuring to daddy-proof them and seeing them weather through poop, puke and pee with the same stoic attitude with me😝

That's a beauty. The old school Seiko 5s rock. I wish they would reissue about a hundred of them but with Seiko quartz instead of 7s26.

I have 32 watches and my most expensive is $180. Least expensive is $10. What watches do you have? Either photos and/or a list. I would be interested in seeing them, and am guessing lots of others would too.

The only trouble with infants and watches is that you have to see your time with your children steadily tick away.

I have a watch from 1986 (Jules Jurgensen) that was a Christmas present from my Dad. It has a Twist-o-Flex. They were a great idea. More watches should have them.

For Christmas in 1963 my parents got me a Mattel Vac-U-Form. This thing made component parts by melting sheets of plastic and forming the soft plastic around a mold. Then you cut the parts out with the included razor sharp knives and punches, glued them together with the (supplied) airplane glue, and painted them with the (also supplied) noxious model paint. In those days, that was thought to be a fine gift for an eight year old, and it was! And I'm still here with all my fingers and both lungs, and great memories of that crazy thing.

That’s fantastic! I remember the science kits that contained questionable chemicals with which to produce caustic experiments…all in the name of good fun.

Yes! thanks for jogging my memory - my friend Dave also had a (Gilbert?) chemistry set about the same time I had the Vac-U-Form. Most of us came from large families and parents got us things that would keep us absorbed and out of their way! They trusted us not to lose fingers or blow ourselves up. I do remember some mix of chemicals produced this big sibilant hiss and produced foam that wouldn't stop.

I think it would make them a lot of $$$. But they don't listen to us, Seiko really does not seem to be customer driven. Considering some of their decisions, I'm not completely sure they care that much about money either. But they could come out with a whole new line too. We'll never know. When you're dealing with creative people, the best thing to do is just stand back and let them create.
