Do you hate date windows?

Here are 8 reasons why I don't like them:

I think it makes beautiful watches more ugly.

95% of the times that I need to check the day or date - my phone is already in my hand or is extremely easy to check because the date is always on the lock screen.

Having to change the date once a month isn't a huge deal, but it's more effort than it's worth for those few times I actually do need it on my watch.

And close to the end/beginning of the month I might have uncertainty about the correctness of the date window.

Though there's probably an app I can get to remind me to change the date.

But to go through all this... just to have my watch be slightly uglier?

Seems easier to just rely on my phone exclusively for the date for those few times when I need to check the date.

Sure, it's nice to have the date on my watch once in a while. But I only use it on my watch because it's digital and always accurate.

I can check my digital one with certainty - which is really important for work, doctor visits, travel, etc.

Most of the time my watch is in countdown alarm mode for quick 10-minute cooking reminders. - But once in a while you'll see it sitting on day-date mode or maybe the stopwatch.

And yes - the digital screen on my watch is definitely uglier than a date window. But this is a tool watch and I don't need it to look perfect. The screen is worth it for the usability it provides.

But if I'm gonna wear a watch that for me is a "dress" watch (like the Phoibos above) I don't want a damn date window. I think it lowers the beauty of the watch.

Having said that, I know that for most people something like that Phoibos would be a daily beater, but I still think the mechanical date window is not worth it.

if Facebook was to give my status “it’s complicated” - as I really like two things:

  • the brilliant simplicity of my date free dials (much prefer my dateless tank dial to my date afflicted santos dial)
  • reading the date on a watch

so I want a date but I also don’t want a date. Clear?

·

Yeah maybe a circle mixed in with circle indices would be nice

Yeah lol

I'm the same with other stuff. I want smart features without the battery limitations.

I really like date windows as it makes my watch technically more functional.
You could use the same arguments against a gmt or chrono function as your telephone is better in it ^^

Gmt I think yes. I've not owned one but I think I might get confused between the hands sometimes. Though I do think they look alright.

But a chronograph is a pain in the ass to use on a phone. Because you need to navigate to the app, keep the phone in your hand the whole time or find a place to put it, etc. That was my first reason to get a watch was to have better access to a chronograph.

Nice to hear your opinion mate. I think I would never use the chronograph function of my watch.

I would use it almost every time to time making my food.

As it wouldn't ring - my food would also get burned ^^

How about something like the Oris Pointer Date. Or this Pembroke from Farer

A date complication without the window.
I like having the date but I’ll admit my current favourite is a watch without.

The 6:00 date window with the color matched wheel is pretty damn good!

I actively look for a date window. It's the reason I chose the Black Bay 58 s&g (my only expensive watch). I find I miss it if it's not there, but I also like that it's a point of quality to look for when I choose my watches.

I now avoid buying new chronographs because I don't use it. Ask me again if I find out a long lost uncle has left me a Daytona 😁

·

Nope; I love a nicely designed date window.

Yeah I use o the chronograph for work stuff. For cooking I love my countdown timer.

I don't love the date hand complication personally. I worry I would confuse the hands in the dark or when I'm tired. Also it still needs adjusting monthly.

But yeah that clemence looks great. Very clean dial. I have the same color on my Citizen but I'm thinking I'll replace this Citizen with something nicer because I just don't use it much. Not because of the color but it's just a bit big and the lume isn't great.

I understand what you mean about the date pointer, but that Farer is just calling me.

I love the Clemence it’s one of my keepers, can definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a nice blue dial.

Thanks.

I'm still not sure what I'll get. Maybe nothing.

I like that Phoibos above but the back side is gonna be uncomfortable for me.

Probably just gonna stick with my Casio for now.

I mean yeah a date window isn't the worst thing. But wouldn't a 6 lol so much better there?

I don't hate date windows. I hate badly implemented date windows, like the one on the SCC speedtimer for example.
