Traveler vs Caller? I'm more in the caller side of the fence but what about you?

So this morning I had to gird my loins and drink another coffee to get ready to set the time and date on the Zelos Horizons.

Image

I can blame this on DST which started as an idea to save electricity back in the 40's and devolved into some kind of pseudo religion to prove how modern and eco sensitive are the governments. For myself I never saw any serious research that proved that someone staying at home is consuming less energy than staying at work. It might have been true 70 years ago but the fact that all I read in the last 20 years are some broad statements and platitudes makes me suspect that it's another idea that sounds logical but failed the test of reality.

Image

Anyway...time for less rambling and more setting. Which was less painful than I expected, once I remembered in which direction to turn the crown to set the date and which is the one to turn the GMT hand.

And that's when I thought to myself that trying it with a traveler GMT would have been a bit more annoying. I do have to set the date every second month, but changing time zones is something that I never do - and if it really became a necessity then I would probably be better off with a digital watch.

Image

Therefore for me the quick date setting feature of a caller GMT is more important than the ability to have an independent hour's hand. But me is me and other people may have a different opinion.

Whatever these opinions may be that can't change mine concerning the look and feel of the Zelos Horizons: It's still one of my best.

One or small watch, Traveller. More than that? Caller.

Travelling for me but that’s because I travel a fair bit. Changing the time for BST is simple. Pull out the crown all the way to hac the movement, advance all hands 1 hour - done. Took a few seconds.

I find the "caller" version more useable on a regular basis. I have flown with a "traveller" GMT as well, and found it useful.

Sure, I see how's it's done on a running Traveler GMT, but this is not what happened with my Zelos today because I left it out of the winder. In this case I think that setting the date and time on a Traveler GMT is more annoying that on a Caller. YMMV of course.

Ahh now I get it. I have 8 a winder case so I always keeping it running. Makes a good case for a quartz gmt, I’m eyeing up a Grand Seiko for this exact reason, set and forget

Caller GMT gets flack from snobs for not being the "true" GMT, but for my usage I find the caller type movement more practical than the traveler so snobs be damned. 🤷

If only GS will decide to make a Spring Drive version of their SBGM221...

I waited so long to get the Jack Mason Flyer/“True” GMT and once I got it, I realized how much of a pain it was to change the date. Right away I new that it wasn’t for me; anyone can DM me if they’re interested in buying jr from me.

I have since transitioned to wanting a caller GMT and am now saving for a CW C63 GMT in 36mm

Day to day the caller GMTs are more useful to me. I can set time zones to the local time of people I need to reach out to to help avoid calling them outside of working hours when possible. Realistically I don’t need a GMT to do this but it is still nice to have

·

I have one of each, caller for the automatic and traveller for the kinetic, for ease of setting it just makes sense to be this way round for me.

·

Both types were instrumental in giving me an excuse to by another watch.

Who cares? You aren't a jet setting rich dude or a pilot, unless you are... In which case you wouldn't ne asking this question! Its a fairly usless complication unlrss you actually need it. By the way I do own one GMT watch... Totally usless to me!😍
