Hi everyone! I need advice - my 9yo son loves anything my husband and I love. So for his birthday and he REALLY wants a watch. What would you guys recommend for a fun entry level watch for a kid who thinks he is all cool like mom and dad 😂… but on a kid budget 😅thanks!!!

Depending on how far the budget stretches, I’d say a g-shock is a good investment! It can take a beating so you won’t have to worry too much about him breaking it, and as far as watches go, they are relatively cheap! Perhaps even find a used one on eBay to save some more cash!

Besides that Casio has a lot of other cheap offerings like the f-91 and the a-168 (the latter of which I own and like a lot!)

Hope this helps a bit!

Casio makes a great entry level (under $40) Diver in 15 colors, theMRW200H or the new smaller sized Casioak. Timex also has a children's line of watches.

·

I gave my 10 year old (now 11) a Casio F91W, and he wears it daily and absolutely loves it. It was under $20.

My 13 year old got a G-Shock Casioak for about $90. He liked it a lot, but often laid it down and forgot about, finally losing it two weeks ago.

If it has to be mechanical, consider something from the Seiko 5 collection under 38 mm. Price will approach $200.

Timex easy reader, and Blok are specifically designed for kids.

I would try to find him something similar to one of Dad’s watches, but more appropriately sized for a smaller wrists. One thing I learned having two children is that they don’t want “kid” stuff, they want the real deal like what their parents have.

·

Can’t go wrong with the Casio F91W or the Casio royal.

·

I just gave my 10 year old daughter my Casio F91-w about a week ago and she loves it. She’s worn it every day. The size is perfect for her until she gets bigger.

I would buy a Casio! Besides their iconic digital watches, they also have a large collection of analog watches in the $30-$50 range that will resemble mom and dad's watches more.

·

The Casio HDA 600 would be a cool choice.

Analog - teach them early

10yr battery

100M water resistance

Comes with a bull bar

Neat handset

$20.00

My first ever watch! Yes they are amazing!

·

Casio, timexx, g-shock.

·

I would think he would want something that is close to his parent's watches. So it would be nice to narrow it down to styles that are close to your watches and show him a few online or in-store. I think sticking to Casio will give you plenty of options and would be "kid-friendly". As someone else said on this thread, let him experience the hunt and the "AD" experience! 😂

Swatch is a GREAT opportunity for a child to personalize both color and theme at an accessible price point. Art, sports, cities etc.

First James Bond watch perhaps?

Did they rerelease those?

Not that I'm aware of. I've been collecting Swatch watches, including these, since before I got "serious" about "real" watches though I rarely post them on this platform.

One of my favorites is an Irony Chronograph that I'm having difficulty finding a replacement band for.

I laugh when people call them junk because other than straps wearing out I've never had a movement need anything other than a fresh battery.

I gave my nephew a used seiko 5 field watch:

SNK805K2

37mm

Display caseback

On a cool looking and kid friendly textile pin-buckle strap (natos are a bit too complicated).

New you can pick these up for just over $100.

Used they'll go for $50.

Go with swatch or Casio. You should find a bunch of option there.

·

Freestyle Shark Watch. They’re rad and water resistant.

You can never go wrong with Casio Baby G-Shock

I’d say don’t get anything digital. Go for an analogue and teach them how to read it. Timex or Citizen have some inexpensive quartz options.

My first ever watch was a tiny quartz indiglo. The dial lit up when one pressed the crown.

Swatch or Timex

Once my daughter is old enough, getting this in a color she wants.

She already by default knows what a watch is since mom and dad talk about them 😂.

I also find it ironic it's the better destro crown option....man I wish bigger companies would take note.

·

A G-shock is very suitable for small kids. I would assume most other watches wouldn't last too long in the hands of a 9 year old.

·

GShock or Timex iron man like a lot of other folks have mentioned. Marathon navigator also fairly indestructible with a rotating bezel you can often find on sale

I came here to say this. While the F91-W is a fine starter watch, I think it’s nice to get them started on analog watches as soon as possible. Also, the HDA 600 would likely look anlot closer to the watches that OP and her husband wear regularly so that would make it cooler in the eyes of the kid. It’s also pretty much a tank and should survive at least until the kid goes off to college.

Yeah, they get a lot hate.I’ve had many throughout the years.Only had one with issues.after 20 years plastic is rotting away in a corner..I personally don’t call them junk. They’re just fun watches.Too bad they aren’t cheap anymore(price wise).

Wow! Thanks everyone!!!
