Every time I buy a watch.

My wife says something to the effect of “It looks like all the other ones.” Or “You already have that one.” I know she tries her best when I blather on about watches all day, but they’re all sort of “the same”, if you think about it. How many watches look like a Submariner? Or a Datejust? There’s only so many ways to skin a cat, so to speak.

Comment the same thing when she gets a new haircut or a new dress etc. 😂😁

Yeah, I’ll leave you my watch collection when she kills me. 🤣

I don't agree they all look the same. There are plenty of watch brands and models that are different enough but most people have fallen into the hype train of Rolex/Tudor. This has created the trendy flex culture where everyone wants to have one - real, fake or in between (homage). Breitling, JLC, Rado, Nomos, Junghans, Bremont, Montblanc, Panerai, Cartier just to name a few that are completely different and just as classy - just not trendy :)

Eh, sure, but there’s a line between design and ridiculousness. You really can’t do a whole lot with design of a watch before it looks ridiculous or becomes unwearable.

·

Well if she can't tell the difference between a 2010 Submariner and a 2020 Submariner I'd suggest she gets her eyes tested. 😋

I have a hard time keeping up with differences and references of Subs. Is it a 5 digit? 6 digit? Idk, it’s all a little ridiculous. They have a new Sub with new dimensions and a new reference number every year it seems.

I hope you are not suggesting the brands I mentioned are ridiculous and unwearable 🙂

Also the same could be said about the Rolex/Tudor hype - when you buy the same watches over and over again in a slightly different size and color then no wonder for the non watch people they are all the same.

The new one is 0.5mm bigger!

No, but there are some Panerai that are ridiculous and unwearable, though. Idk, I agree with you in some way, but also, every watch looks like and takes design elements from others. Most Genta design watches look like a Royal Oak or Nautilus.

What the fuck ?! Really?! That’s it?!

Not quite, slightly different case and wider lugs as well but you'd be hard pushed to tell them apart if you didn't know.

Yes every watch looks more or less like another before but thats because they all obey the same laws of physics and need to serve the same need - tell time. Panerai, Cartier, JLC and Breitling don't look at all like Rolex even for the non watch geek people and still look stunning.

And yes most Genta designs look the same because they are all made by Genta - check some non trendy watches and you will see a huge variety of designs with the same prestige as the ones you are mentioning.

I literally didn’t mention anything about “trendy” watches. Franc Meuller isn’t “trendy” but Richard Mille clearly borrowed the tonneau case from them. You’re clearly passionate about your opinion, whatever, that’s fine. All I said was that all watches, to an extent, will look the same. And how do you explain some of the Vaceron models with a cushion case that looks like a Panerai? Are VC “trendy”?

·

I am passionate about watches and not about my opinion - it has changes many times by many people over the years. And yes RM has copied a lot of Franc Muller's design and are quite popular now.

All I was pointing to is that if you look further you will find watches that don't look like the Rolex models you mentioned. Just because every watch has hands, crown and "circular" case doesn't mean they are the same - unless they are deliberately trying to mimic a style/model to boost sales because of the trends lately. Basically all cars are the same because they have 4 wheels and doors with windows... 🙂

VC are not trendy - they are class and have been around long before Panerai existed.

·

Its true, my friend. Most watches do look very similar to most, and thus why generally speaking, no one cares what you're wearing besides other watch nerds and thieves, it seems. But for those of us in the hobby, it's the little things that make the distinctions and differentiation. A 38mm hand winding field watch may look nearly the same to someone as a 40mm automatic pilots watch. The small differences designate the purpose. I get it, my wife says the same. :)

Have you thought of diversifying away from modern Invicta? (jk)

Never 🤣

·

As a somewhat specialist in the art of skinning cats I can tell you that if you want to play this game then you should also be prepared to cooperate when your wife shows you her latest shoes or hand bag and asks for your opinion.

·

Yeah I’ll let you know when I have $500,000 laying around. 🤣

No need of so much money, a weird Casio will do as well.

Means you need to get a Mr. Jones next…

I respect the brand and the Sub (meanwhile I don't think I'll buy one ever), but I can't understand the fuss about those tiny details that makes them sometimes ridiculously more expensive. For me there are two Subs, the maxi case and the old one, sorry 🤣

For people who aren't into watches, they do look all the same. They're generally little metal cases, with some numbers, and three hands. That's what normies see. The same as a fan of a sports team might own half a dozen jerseys from that team which, to them, are all incredibly different. To a normie, they're wondering why that person needs half a dozen of the same thing. And so on, and so forth, in relation to so many interests and hobbies.

·

I know your feeling. I already have an SKX and when I bought a Baby Turtle my wife said the same thing. "Why did you buy the same watch?"

·

I start explaining all of the intricaten differences when she tells me they look the same. At that point she just walks away. She has since stopped making that comment 🤣.

·

Mine recently said about the Tudor chrono "it looks very much like your Rolex (Oyster perpetual 36).

·

I used to say the same thing when my wife was into handbags a while back. "It doesnt matter how many handbags you get. You still have only a couple of dollars inside it and a bunch of the same makeup"

Yeah, I have found that if I bore my wife to the point of near death, she’ll walk away. That’s for anything. Knife steel, the emitters in my flashlight I carry, anything lol. Works like a charm.

“That’s a bold strategy, Cotton. Let’s see if it pays off for him.”

Sounds familiar. 🤣
