What are you saving for?

Hello all,

What are you saving for?.... and how long have you got to go?

During covid lockdown I purchased a Seiko SWR049 as an affordable alternative to the Cartier Tank. I wanted to see whether it scratched the itch and whether I connected with the style of the watch. It was a revelation. I used it plenty dressing it up and dressing it down to suit..... but..... the dimensions were just not quite right. So off it went and I committed to saving for the real thing.

While saving (and selling other watches to help fund it) I went deep into its history and those who wore it. It has helped my resolve in staying the course.

I resisted the temptation to pull the trigger on other squares while saving.... it was bloody tough.

Now I am only about 2 months away from the goal. Sure I could throw the credit card at it to get me to the end but no... again.... resist and do it right... no debt.

So, back to the question at hand. Are you saving for a special piece? What is it? How long you got to go?

Not saving for anything specific at the moment. I have been spending like crazy on watch parts to do custom watches. I’m not sure what the bext big piece will be but for now I have been content with custom builds.

I'm saving up for a Shunbun. That's what I tell myself. However, knowing myself, in all likelihood I'll decide it's really silly to spend this amount of money on a fashion accessory in the end and instead treat myself to a better value purchase like a CW C63 or Farer Lander that I love. Something that aligns more with my values and that I'm more comfortable wearing on my wrist.

The idea of high luxury doesn't sit well with me because the diminishing returns are absurd and I don't want to become a sucker for brand recognition, so I know I'm fooling myself with this pursuit of Grand Seiko craftsmanship and I'll change my mind eventually. But I'll never stop drooling over the exquisite watches they craft, only in pictures. 😂

Ahh the Shunbun..... yes Grand Seiko has tried to suck me in but the thought of trying to keep the zaratsu polishing in top nick would do my OCD no good!

High luxury doesnt necessarily sit well with me either but I love design and balance on a dial and with the Tank there simply isn't an alternative that ticks all the boxes. They are always a little too wide or a little too long or a little too thick etc... you see..... OCD🤣

I'm currently saving for a Rolex 16570 Explorer II polar. It's at least a year off.

Luckliy, as my savings are going up, the prices are coming down. Let's see where the two meet...

I'm not, but my wife is saving for a JLC Master Control. I'm going to be pretty jealous when she buys it. Especially since it was once my grail watch 😑

·

I can't do saving as I can't do waiting. Fortunately I have beer taste to go with my beer money.

A watch on the wrist is worth two in the shop attitude 😁

My regular ad is patiently waiting for me to make my way to his shop to examine a grey dial Baume &Mercier Moonphase fitted with their in house movement, he ordered the watch in for me but I am not obligated to buy since I often change my mind about a next watch when I am shopping. Lately I find myself buying brands that are less popular, a consequence of fatigue reading about Rolex, Omega and Grand Seiko. Moved on from Rolex decades ago still love Omega not thrilled with the price increases lately and still waiting to source a spring drive from GS but again the model that I am looking at is 14k cad not beyond my resources but still a lot of dollars.

There's not one watch I am saving for, more of an opportunity, if I am in japan at the time and where my fiscal journey is in the next 2-3 years relative to milestone age (40).

The watches are either. Grand Seiko SLGH013 or SBGR002 or SBGW033

Otherwise a Cartier Ronde de Louis 0900 01.

Random set of circumstances/criteria but it'll give me time to slow down and appreciate watches I do have and time to really consider if that's what I really want.

Couldn't agree with you more. The fatigue on Rolex, Omega and GS is real.👍

Something big, my grail watch 😊 I think Im about 3-4 months away financially. But for "the call" I don't know 😂. hopefully soon! (not Rolex)

I’m boring, saving for a Speedmaster or a Rolex 116264 Turn-o-graph. Currently tho I have been second guessing if I really should be saving for that large of a “frivolous” purchase. But I’ll be 40 in 5 years, so maybe it’ll make all the needlessly justified sense in the world by then.

·

No, I'm retired and buy what I like. I'm very fortunate to be able to do so.

Enjoy your watches!

Cheers

Black Bay 54 and a Porsche 911 😬

·

Daytona. But I'll probably buy a painting instead.

·

Saving for a santos de cartier but it’s been so hard restricting myself from buying lol…so worried about price increases

·

Saving for an Omega 2254 or Vertex automatic. Capital tied up in "lesser" watches I've gotta sell off first....aiming for 6 months 🤞🏻
