Q: How did you get into watch collecting?

After receiving my first 'good' watch, the gift of an Omega Seamaster Professional 36mm from my wife, my interest in watches began to grow. This was the beginning of building a modest collection.

Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?

Years ago, I owned numerous watches growing up. Timex, Casio, Texas Instruments (wish I still had this one), and later a Seiko Quartz chronograph. The first quality watch was an Omega Seamaster Professional 36mm given to me back in 1999. Of all the watches I have, this one means the most to me.

Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?

In March 1999, my wife and I were killing time in a Boston watch store while waiting for a nearby restaurant to open. I loved looking at watches in magazines and occasionally in stores, but I never thought I would own anything better than the Seiko Quartz I was wearing. Here, I saw an Omega Seamaster Professional for the first time. To me, it was the perfect watch. The sales assistant removed it from the display cabinet, and I positioned it on my wrist. The solid feeling. The quality of workmanship. It was a 36mm masterpiece. However, I handed it back to the sales assistant and thanked him for his time. Toward the end of our lunch, my wife concluded our conversation saying, “Let’s go back and get it. I really think you should have it.” And we did. Since that time, I have acquired a modest collection, but if I could only keep one watch, this would be the one.

Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?

Never buy a watch on impulse. Sleep on the decision.

Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?

I have had a growing interest in some of the lower priced watches, keeping in mind the limitations of my 6.25 inch wrist. Timex has brought out some nice timepieces. Casio's huge product line has some interesting watches at numerous price points. Seiko has some incredible watches as well, and Hamilton and Tudor can't be ruled out.

Q: What is your grail watch and why?

Oddly enough, I don't have a grail watch.
