A wonderful Christmas gift

A very unexpected gift this Christmas from my wife. This year I started travelling to China for work. I will be travelling there again next year and I had mentioned to my wife that I would be interested in picking up this watch next time I travel. For me it would be a nice connection to have to my work. I said this to her weeks after she had already bought this. Great minds….

Absolutely thrilled with this.

Absolutely. This is a reissue of the 1963 Chinese fighter pilot watch. The brand is Seagull but is free from any branding on the dial to keep in line with the 60’s model. Under the red star, you’ll see the ‘19 Zuan’ which means 19 jewels. That was on the original but I beleive this reissue has 21 jewels. There are some models with 21 Zuan on them which have sapphire crystal while this has acrylic.

The movement is the Seagull ST19 which was developed from a Swiss movement after the Seagull factory purchased Swiss machinery in the 50’s. The same movement can be found in the likes of the Studio Underdog Chronograph.

There is some debate around this piece as there are many manufacturers of the Seagull 1963 Chronograph. The original manufacturer is in Tianjin, China. The movement comes from that factory and is licensed to other manufacturers.

I’m absolutely loving it. I’m going to try different straps as I think this could be versatile enough to dress up and down.

Hope you had a great Christmas too.

Exactly that!! I have a whole selection of straps I often switch out with quick release spring bars!
