What’s next????

Added another one to the collection. What’s next?

I am looking for the perfect 3 watch collection.

1. Omega Speedmaster Professional 1863 sapphire sandwich.
2. Tudor BB 58 - Blue

3. ….?

Tell me that I am wrong. It is dressy, scratches whatever Rolex or vintage itch that you may have, and is next level. You could slot a JLC Reverso here, but the Rolex would be unexpected.

(This whole exercise is just a matter of taste. I don't know what you like...too small a sample size. Besides, I don't believe in a one or three watch collection.)

A one watch collection is not a collection, it is merely a watch.  Since you mentioned only odd numbered collections I will skip two watch collections (really just an insecure one watch collection).

Three watch collections are an intellectual exercise in naming attributes and ascribing them to watches that we like.  A three watch collection is barely a collection. A three watch collection is usually a wealth or status flex.  There is never room in a three watch collection for your grandfather's Timex or a weird old Raketa that you find on eBay.  The slots are too precious.  A three watch collection proclaims that only these pieces have been judged to be worthy. It is wearying.

Five and seven watch collections give you more room to explore and experiment.  They both require discipline and still wind up having upper end pieces.  Grandpa's Timex may make it as a sentimental choice but the colorful microbrand gives way to the Sinn, because the tool watch slot or whatever is too valuable. They are less artificial but many fun watches are left for less discriminating collectors.

Those are my deep thoughts on odd numbered collections.  I will be expanding it into book length soon:  Knopf, tentatively titled "The Odd Collector", Fall 2023.  One last thought, every collection should have a non-round watch.  When I see watch boxes filled with only dark dialed divers, I despair.

Platonic ideals are just ideals.

It looks like you have two nice watches, why not even it out a bit with a rugged and affordable time piece? Maybe something simple like a ironman or tough solar? Either would be perfect for field environments.

Or maybe, just maybe, a 3 watch collection could be for someone that is a minimalist?

I’ve been wanting an Explorer II for yeahs now. It’s like you jumped into my brain haha. I also have a love hate relationship with the Santos. Good call on that as well.

John Mullany : I'm sorry?

Graham : No, it's just, I, you know, I just think - right now I have one key and everything I own is in the car, and I just... I like that, you know? I mean, I just, if I get an apartment, that two keys, if I... get a job, you know, I might have to open or close, that's more keys, you know, buy some stuff, I'm afraid it's gonna get ripped off, or something, and I get more keys, and I just, I, you know, I just like having the one key, it's clean.

Ann : You're not gonna worry in losing them, I always lose my keys, I hate that.

One watch discussions always remind me of the above dialogue by James Spader in "Sex, Lies, and Videotape."  One of anything seems like a rationalization.

A true minimalist would struggle to have one watch and would find a Nomos too "frilly."

A three watch collection is large enough for someone to think that it is interesting and several watches short of being truly interesting.

Casio F-91W

heheheh

We are old.

·

Something from the Grand Seiko seasons collection would round that collection out nicely. Maybe a white birch.

They'd have one watch, if that.  :-)

·

I won't use odd numbered lockers at the gym; I certainly couldn't have an odd number of watches...  Hmm, maybe I should get that looked at?

Maybe. Everyone is different and sees things through a different lens.

In some of the simulations you like three watches, in some you like more…

How so?

I have the same taste… I have the new 3861 Moonwatch, and would love that Tudor BB Blue, so I think my 3rd would be a vintage dress watch. I have my grandfather’s 1952 Longines, but if it wasn’t for that, I’d probably go Rolex Datejust 1601 from the 60-70s.
