Which one would you get? Grand Seiko or Baume & Mercier

I am looking at the Baume & Mercier Riviera with the Baumatic movement alongside the Grand Seiko SBGR315. The actual purchase prices of each watch are not that different. However there is certainly a difference in styling. I would love to hear people's opinions on which one they would choose and why. Thank you all in advance for your help.

I went with GS purely because it is not a Genta style. Still very high quality and has a design language all its own.

I don't think that GS is all that distinctive, but the decagon and exposed fasteners really aren't my cup of tea. Sadly, the shadowy skeleton dial is really neat. If the crown didn't look like a piston, I might be willing to overlook the rest, as I'd prefer to go B&M than GS.

I first examined Grand Seiko watches in a mall store chatting with a 3rd generation watchmaker who knew what he was talking about but I would not buy my first until just 4 years ago. GS watches really appeal to guys who love watches but that is stating the obvious. It should not at all be a point for considerstion but I sense a slight elevation in popularity for the B&M Riviera which has been around a long long time. They have always manufactured quality watches in my opinion. I would chose the Grand Seiko.

If you are looking for a versatile piece then you should get the GS, i have the black version and its been a great everyday piece. Just know that its not the thinnest and the crown is a little small.

Just saw a Riviera in the flesh yesterday, and I have to say I really liked it. Didn't try it, just in the window. Very well proportioned, beautiful finishing. The Baumatic is an excellent offer to me.

You are comparing two very differen watches, IMO it will all comes down to your current collection. I love the B&M, however, it might bore you at some point (if it is going to be your everyday watch), the GS is so classic that it hardly would. If this is not and everyday watch the B&M can work for you.

I prefer the GS, I am a big guy, but for some reason the bracelet on the B&M seems a little bulky for me... also I am a big GS fan and a very boring enthusiast...

Cheers and good luck... post some pics of whatever you end up buying!!!

I think Seiko is at their best when they do electronic watches. Battery-Quartz or Spring Drive. Not a fan of their automatics.

I would go GS over B&M, but only with a spring drive movement. Spring drive is so incredible, I wouldn't pick up a GS without one.
