SOT(GS)C

I just got me the fourth Grand Seiko, so I thought it was time to post the State of the (Grand Seiko) Collection. So that makes two Spring Drives, two Hi-Beat GMTs, two 44GS cases, one 62GS, one nameless, blobby Elegance Collection case, one in titanium.

Must. Stop. Now. I don't have a problem. I'm not an addict. I can stop anytime I want to. If I ever do get another Grand Seiko, it will have to be an Evolution 9 with a 9SA5 movement. The dual impulse escapement is too cool.

This time the box came wrapped in a nifty furoshiki cloth. Cool. No other swag, though.

Edit: @TickyBurden requested more comment below, so here goes.

I'm partial to the Spring Drive. It's Grand Seiko's most unique movement, no one else makes anything like it. It's accurate. It's robust; it doesn't have a delicate escapement banging back and fort, so it should be slower to wear, and I worry about it less. And yes, that smooth sweeping seconds hand that everyone goes on and on about ad nauseam is mesmerizing. The 5 Hz Hi-Beat movement is rare and interesting, but not unique. And since it beats faster than a standard 4 Hz movement, it presumably will wear faster. I suppose some day I should get quartz too, to be a completionist.

The 44GS is Grand Seiko's most iconic case, and it's cool, but it's not my favorite. Yes, all them vast, polished surfaces are Impressively blingy, but they're fingerprint and scratch magnets, so quickly look less pristine. Also, it wears chunky; the Peacock wears much bigger than the Shosho, even though they have essentially the same dimensions. The blobby Elegance Collection case is less notable, but it hides its size well; I was really surprised learn that the Shosho is 14mm+ thick when I tried it on. the 62GS has less polished surface, so it's less shiny, but it also shows scratches less. It's unique in its own right. I don't have a favorite case; they each have something going for them.

I love seeing GS collections!!! You’ll love the 9SA5 as long as you get one that’s been regulated properly. 😝 I adore my White Birch but GS could do a better job regulating them from the factory. Mine was running anywhere from +11 to +13 seconds a day in all 6 positions. Way too much for me to be comfortable with in a brand new watch. It now runs anywhere from +3.6 to +8 sec depending on position. It’s acceptable but I would have preferred it to be within COSC spec for the money you’re paying. Oh well, all my other Spring Drives work flawlessly. Hell my 9RA2 5 Day Spring Drive in my Lake Suwa has only gained 0.6 seconds in three months!! I hope they’ve gotten better with the 9SA5 production. It’s a gorgeous movement to look at through the sapphire caseback. Enjoy your collection in good health! 🥂

·

Excellent collection and a nice array of colors. Thanks for sharing.

I “only” have two GS so far, but I feel like they cover a lot of GS design. The skyflake, in the elegance case but with 100m or WR, and the snowflake dial with a spring drive.

And then the SLGH009, which has the new 80 hi-beat movement (9SA5) but it’s in the 44GS case! With heat blued screws too since it’s a LE!

In my opinion the 9sA5 high beat movement looks a lot better than the 9rA2 spring drive movement and i considered both when i was in the market to get my 2nd GS. It was between the black birch and the lake suwa at dawn. But unfortunately i read some issues with the accuracy in timekeeping of the new high beat movement. Growing pains i guess? So i got the lake suwa at dawn and have no regrets 🥰

Enjoy your GS collection ☺️

Wow that is impressive accuracy on the 9RA2 🤩😍

I only tested mine for a month because i switch it out with my other watches after that to let it rest. Mine ran -0.5 in a 30 day period. I love the grand seiko spring drive 🤗

The boutique in New York SoHo is trying to unload one. They tried to sell it to me, even though they knew I had a deposit down on one at the boutique uptown. They were pushing it just yesterday. If you really want it, try giving them a call.

Awesome color combo among your dials and beautiful watches!

I need a red one of these days ..

Got the Sakura and the Blue Glacier 017

Does your 017 have a blue tinted crystal? It looks that way. Very extra ordinary indeed. Love that icy snowy dial.

Yes i got it at wako as my japan trip souvenir. Perfect way to remember japan. Also it was a good excuse to the wife for me to get another "last watch purchase" 🤣

This is such an amazing piece. Was this also LE, or limited distribution?

Thanks Jon! I was comparing a Lake Suwa, a Ginza (the LE turquoise one) and a Sea of clouds quartz - and this one looked the best when they were all sitting in front of me. It's a LE of 255 pieces and done in combination with AJHH. Very limited JDM model, with a very different blue PVD crystal edge that pops blue in certain light. It's hard to photograph but cool in person. Other than mine, I think there are none in North America.

Right now, there is a bunch on C24 right now, so deals can be had. If you are interested. 9RA5 is 0.0 sec/day and 5 day power reserve.🥰

I'd love to, but I should be getting a Sub before the end of the year, and I already have two GS in the collection. If I make another big purchase this year I will be in hot water :-)

I'll just continue to enjoy photos of yours :-)

Wako visit demands a new GS watch 👌! Glad wifey was of sound reason when you visited 👍

Image

The crystal on the 017 tricked me when I first saw it as well - and I asked the same question - is it all blue?

The agent, pointed out the obvious -“ look at the indices” the main crystal is not blue! But yes, the very edge of it has PVD blue, so it flashes blue at the edge when the light hits it. 🤩
