Pondering a Straum Limited Edition

I need to think out loud about this watch, and get some opinions. I saw it pop up on YouTube yesterday, and immediately grabbed my attention. Red is my color, and I've been looking for a good red watch. The dial looks rather Grand Seikoesque, and I love me a Grand Seiko (I have More than one). Of course my luck the color I want is limited edition, so it's got my FOMO going. You have to order it between April 13th and 20th, or forever hold your peace, otherwise I'd wait for more reviews and buyer feedback. It looks like it could be a nice watch, but at €1,600/$1,725 it's mighty pricey for a mostly unknown microbrand. So, YOLO, throw caution to the wind, and go for it? Or, what are you thinking, give it a pass? Are there any Straum owners out there?

Thanks for that link. Very helpful

·

Yeah, I'm sure you'll take a major hit on these on the secondary market. But then I never sell. They may be hard to find used after the fact.

·

Now that's a dial for Pentecost!

Yo @NightWatch are you seeing this? Way the heck out of my price range, but man oh man!

Woah. Stunning.

·

That was the video that triggered the FOMO. And he was leery of the price.

·

I'd love to trade my white dial for this red one!

Spent some time learning about them during the tournament, very nice watches.

·

Get it!

·

I wanted this quite a bit till I saw the price. From what I've heard of the brand they are pretty good at delivering quality watches but at that price I might just save a bit more and buy something not from a microbrand.

·

Their dials are pretty damn good looking. And, overall quality seems up there. It is pricey. Just have to weigh if the price for entry for such a piece is worth it for you or not. Maybe might find second hand, but that red dial is pretty limited release.. either quantity is limited and/or time to buy one is also limited to. After that, no more of that red dial. But, the other colors will be more available and not limited.

On YouTube, Peter Kotsa did note that he wasn't able to get a good fit with the available link adjustment. Something to consider as this will, or should be, mostly on the bracelet.

·

Love that dial. Wow

The watch is expensive because of this bloody trip !!!!

I have a Opphav Damascus. There are two things I don’t like about it that I thought I wouldn’t care as much about:

  • the alternating short and long indices

  • lack of a bracelet since they can’t offer one in Damascus steel

Looks like neither of those issues exist with the Jan Mayen. I’m curious if the floating dial from the Opphav is being carried over to this model. I will also say these watches photograph really well in the studio. I think they look okay on the wrist and feel like they’re overpriced for what you get.

I had a good customer service experience with the founder. The hour hand was misaligned when the minute hand was at 00 and he paid for round trip shipping to Ronda for the defect to be fixed. He seemed like a nice guy.

Oh that's too bad. Speaking to the co-founder about a quality issue made me think they were sorely under-staffed. I hope they've established more of a footing to address any customer service concerns. Not sure how much comfort or assurance Fratello teaming up with them provides - could be considered a vote of confidence?

Interesting. I don't see that address on the website.

·

I like the dial but not to level that would justify the price.

·

That dial is a thing of beauty! 😍

·

Also considered this piece. Fell in love with the dial and integrated bracelet, and the fact that it is Norwegian (I'm danish, so in the lager scheme of things we are kind of related 😂). But couldn't currently justify the price point. So I looked at seikos offerings and found the spb227j1 (see below), at less than half price, and pulled the trigger. But the Jan mayen is a beuatiful watch and I believe it sports a well regulated movement and the finishing is very good, so perhaps the price is justified?

I’m looking at that one myself. I’ve been thinking that I would really like to add a red dial sports watch to my collection, but have struggled to find the perfect one.

The Oris Aquis Cherry is nice, but I already have a Planet Ocean and one overly chunky diver is enough for me.

I really like this Minase watch. Pretty much exactly what I want, but not sure I want to spend $7000+ just to add a red dial.

Image

The Seiko in the post above is nice, but the framed date window really detracts from the red dial.

This may be the perfect compromise, but I hate that I can’t see it first and have to make a decision in just a few days. I’ll probably end up doing nothing.

I think the red in the Seiko sharp edged is better

·

The vibrancy of the color was also my concern. In some pictures the Jan mayen red looked gorgeous, but in others dull including the fratello video. The seiko, the red looked vibrant in both pictures and video.

·

Too much for me to risk. Nice dial, though I'm not in love with the 70's integrated bracelet design.

Good to hear that you had a good experience. I came back to say that I just had an exchange with someone who said they had a problem with a watch in the first month, tried to contact them through the website, got no response, and in the end no redress.

I checked their website, and half the links under "Assistance" lead to blank pages. Like "Warranty information," nothing, no information. So just what warranty do they offer? "Contact us" gets you to a link to a chat box where you can leave a message. And nothing else, no address, no phone number, not even an email. I asked them through the chat about the warranty, we'll see if I get a response. But in any case, it's not a good look for a serious business. It's like they didn't bother to finish that part of their website.

How did you contact them?

Reporting back that I got a response from Straum, and they added warranty information. They offer two years. Good to know, but it still seems to me a significant oversight.

The watch looks great. In today’s market… I think price is fair. 39mm integrated bracelet with 100 mt water resistance and a stunning dial. It is an Fratello collab, so will sell out for sure.

Agree that the warranty is disappointing at 2 years…. I would spend the money if I did not have too many integrated bracelets in my collection.

·

I'm in the same boat. I think I'm going to skip it though. I really enjoy their dials but it's steep pricing.

The support link issue you reported also concerns me

·

These reviews are making it difficult for me to ignore this watch.

I’m getting one. Read multiple reviews and traded emails with Fratello. The fact that such a well respected company such as Fratello is a partner on the red eased any concerns. There’s a lot for me to like; killer fumé dial, crown guards, sporty finish, respectable movement, integrated bracelet, and plenty of lume. Bracelet does not have a micro adjustment and others nitpick at different things but it checks virtually everything I’m looking for. Straum wrote me back, took a day but I’m satisfied this is worth my investment. I don’t see these unloaded or crashing on the secondary market. Why? They’re a new micro brand yes, but the Fratello X Straum red was one year in development. Regarding the color, Fratello agreed that the video can look washed out but they, and several YouTube reviewers, told me the dial is blood red vibrant. I’m pretty psyched to be wearing mine even with a six month expected wait.
