Getting rid of pieces to buy new ones what is your opinion on that

I made the desicion and I’m currently selling this Timex .

I had made myself a rule that I wanted to own 1 watch per brand that I was interested in , and no more per brand just so I could challenge myself to really be specific about the watches I wanted. Now I’m about to sell my orient ( which you can see in my page ) which was my first automatic watch and this Timex which was one of the only automatic pieces from the brand that spoke to me and I’m about to sell this one too to invest in pricier pieces and not have to come up with all of it from my own budget .

With that in mind when I bought these I never did with the intention of selling them ( although I keep all the boxes and papers but that’s just because im meticulous about that ) so my question to you is , what do you think about selling pieces to get new ones ? Have you done it ? And have you regretted it after you did it ?

I absolutely love the colors on that dial.

Thank you ! Is a brown almost burgundy color. It really pains me to let it go but I have to thin out the collection to make space for other pieces and to cover the cost of those pieces as I start collecting more expensive brands like Certina , Mido , Hamilton , Xeric etc

·

Yeah, I've done that ... makes sense ... and no regrets!

·

Been there, done that. And no, I don't regret it since the piece that I sold never actually fits my style and all.

·

Lots & lots , regret a few, got a few gems.

Part of the life 😄👍🏻

Yes

·

I wouldn’t sell the first auto

·

I sold four about a month ago

·

I’ve got a phone, so have no need of a watch, so no regret in getting rid of these useless, expensive pieces of metal… AS IF! It’s a mixture, some pieces I’ve moved on and miss them, mostly I move on pieces I bought on an impulse buy and then regretted. I’ve never sold a piece that has sentimental value to me though. Good luck with the journey.

You take such a bath on resale value it usually is not worth the effort. Better to keep it or gift it.

In the same position at the moment looking to sell the Tuna first and then the C6 to fund something smaller. Both would have to go to fund it and the Tuna is going to be the harder sell.

Hope you get what you want 👍

·

Hmmm unless you rolling in it then for some it’s the only way, I would have liked to have kept all my cars but who has parking for 50+ cars so they get sold for better ones, think about it that way!

I don’t sell the watches there easy to store and the family can divvie them up when I’m gone 🤷‍♂️

I heard someone say that before they sell a watch they put it away for a month so it is not available to them. If they find themselves missing it then they have an idea how they would feel if they sold it, and if they forget about it then they gain peace about selling it. Seemed like a good idea to me.

Good to hear , this is giving me confidence to move forward

Gotcha , that’s a smart move for sure

Stratorider

I never do it.

I'll buy another watch "whenever I want/can afford it".

I'll own as many as it takes from every brand (even worse, every caliber) I'm interested in.

I won't sell any single one. I'll pass it on to my son.

Edit - I don't have any strict rules.

I wanted to do that too ! Kind of a shame that from that perspective that I’m selling it , I want to give some to my future kids for sure

I have a list of watches I need to get my act together and sell to do this very thing: 3 Orients, 2 Vostok Europes, a Ricoh, vintage Seiko 5 and some other non-watch related things

Best of luck with that !

Maverick5080

Wow, we’re very similar!

I too bought a lot of watches with no intention of selling……

I created rules for myself…..no more than $300 per watch, keep it automatic, keep it Swiss etc…..

I’ve pretty much broken all those rules except the $300 one….but now, I want a quality time piece.

So……I thought how would I feel if I sold some…..well, I did and to be honest, don’t regret or miss what I sold.

You see….I realized that there are only really like 2 watches in my collection that I love, the rest I just like…..

So, after selling 12, I figured let’s sell some more and see how it goes. It’s liberating actually. 🍻

That is actually so refreshing to hear someone going through something similar , I will miss some of the pieces but they will be funding better ones and those can be passed on. Wishing you the best of luck in your journey !!

I don't ever buy with intentions to sell, but I've sold countless watches to fund new ones. I like nice things and my salary doesn't allow me to keep everything I buy. No regrets. You can always buy it again if you really miss it. Usually I'll have a new watch in mind so I'll decide what needs to go to fund it. Then I buy the watch and keep them all for a bit. After a while I know if I want to sell what I just bought or sell the others I already had. I almost always buy used so if I don't like the watch as I hoped, I can sell it and break even. My collection is like a revolving door; always something in and something out.

That is a great way to look at it and yes the funding has to come from somewhere and it can’t all be from the salary right

Tzalmavet

It makes sense but never done it personally and don't intend to. Its a rule of mine not to sell

I respect that !

watchnate

i’ve only sold one watch so far. I may sell another soon. i am cautious as I do not want to have some random regrets later.

I can agree with that bearing cautious with this is smart

RenaissanceTinker

I buy and sell stuff constantly. I don’t like having tons of possessions but like to experience having different things. If I didn’t buy/sell/trade I wouldn’t know what it was that I exactly wanted. All that said my preference is barter.

Cheers ! To many more then

I completely agree here. I gave away my first Orient and a Seiko that I had. I would have made next to nothing and the gift meant way more to me and the person gifted too.

The burgundy dial really looks beautiful!

I’ve never sold any watch in my collection before. I have only thought about it for one watch and that was because I felt detached from it. To me personally I care about things like, my first watch, or a watch that commemorates a particular day. But that’s only me. Because I think that your strategy is worth it and will enable you to get to your grail watch faster. So if I was in your shoes, I’d ask myself one question… will the return on selling the watch be significant enough to help me reach this much faster?

·

Yep done it just these past few months. Time to hunt again.

·

No regrets. Thats a beauty. Dont let it go. So buy watches only when u can afford it. No need to sell ur loved ones to "make room". So maybe get another revenue stream to fund another watch buy:)

·

I occasionally sell things that I know I won’t enjoy using much and i typically don’t look back.

True , but for now i think I’ll be partying ways with it , it’s not getting much attention on eBay so maybe it will sit there for a while before it’s sold
