When will enough be enough?

I know this is a watch collecting site for nerds and the point is to learn about, share and collect watches but to what point?

I'm not talking about how happy it makes you, how many watches you've collected or how much you've spent. I know we do this because we love it. It's makes us happy. I've seen a couple of ridiculous collections of hundreds of watches and I've seen a crazy 3 watch collection worth a house. So I feel I understand the why and the how we collect. But what's your endgame?

For example: Do you have a grail watch that will make you say I'm done? Will 12 Casio's be enough to make you say I'm satisfied? Would a watch for every child would do the trick? What I want to know is what will make you stop collecting?

When will enough be enough?

When whichever comes first: I have zero or negative money; I lose both my arms; I lose my vision; Grand Seiko overtakes Rolex as #1 in sales.

I honestly believe I will keep collecting until I will figure out why am I really doing it. The real decision will then follow. But you know, it is not about the destination, it's all about the journey.

I’ll just collect until I don’t feel like it anymore. As you say, we do this for enjoyment, so I’ll go until I don’t enjoy it. I’ve never understood having a bunch of rules but I guess that’s what makes some happy.

I’ve noticed my tastes and the amount of time I want to spend on watches have changed over time and I assume they will continue to do that. I don’t forsee a time when I’m not into watches at all, but maybe there will come a day when I don’t want anymore watches. Or maybe not. What I’m pretty sure about is that it won’t be because I’ve found a certain watch, it will just be about not feeling the thrill anymore.

My best guess is that I will buy fewer or no watches while still being interested in watches in general.

I like to think that I have a grail 3 watch collection (4 if you count a beater gshock). If I obtain that in my life time, I'd be done and get rid of all my other watches. Not counting the few sentimental ones that I have.

Let's hope none of that never happens except GS taking over.

True but where are you heading?

I'm "almost" there to tell you the truth. My modest collection of inexpensive watches numbers total of 16 and is a mixture of auto/mechanical and quartz. I can't afford (nor do I aspire to) the more expensive, higher-end timepieces, so though I do appreciate them, I practically, don't "jones" for 'em either.

Only thing that's really on my radar right now is a Timex Q re-issue ... the '75 or '78 ... the reverse panda Q chrono is cool too. These aren't easy to find for reasonable (read: relatively "inexpensive") prices though 😕

Any of youse folks that have either that ya wanna unload, hit me up! 😉

I think your right interest will change. It will probably come and go but I know I'll always wear a watch.

I do not have an endgame nor a grail watch in mind. I have however set a limit to 12 watches and I have 11 now. If I get a new one then one has to leave before the purchase. My thinking has changed in the last 4 months. I still see exciting watches that I would like to get BUT I ask each time now when I look at something that I would consider purchasing this question "What does this watch bring that I do not already have ?". This question has eliminated many watches. I also take now at least 6 months to buy a new watch to make sure I really want to get it.

From my perspective, each watch that I have bring the excitement back from the first day I purchased it so that keeps the growth in check.

That should feel good when you feel done. I like that your looking for your last couple of pieces.

I'm trying to buy every 6 months or so. I also want a dozen or so watches. I have a 5 to go. For me it's it making sure I really want the watch also.

I have one, Hamilton Khaki. My 3(4) would be:

Tool - Tudor BB S&G (I want to have date).

Everyday - Hamilton Khaki auto (not the most expensive for a grail, but I just love it).

Dress - Still trying to figure that one out. Maybe a datejust.

Beater - I keep hoping they make a gshock mudmaster much smaller. Until then, any analog gshock.

Well, nothing will make me quit. When I quit I'm dead lol. I guess that's it. Death. It gives me a lot of pleasure with this hobby. I've given up on 2 other hobbies. I'm retired and it keeps me busy in another sense of passing time. No puns on words. I do basics on the watches from simple repairs to customizing watch straps from my nephew's business. One to four watches a year. Some are moved on sold or given away. Most of my give aways go to my grown sons.

Enjoy your watches!

Cheers

I would love to stop buying new watches once I have a Rolex. But the likely hood of this happening is slim. If I had the money to buy a Rolex, I most likely wouldn’t be worried about buying other watches that I like whenever I felt like it.

For me, this post is super important and everyone on this app needs to ask themselves this question. For me, I have been asking myself what do I wear in my collection and what can I live without in my collection. So I’m selling some watches and getting rid of some.

The good thing about this app is every time I post about a watch I am reminded of why I like it, why I appreciate it, and why it’s important to just be content and thankful for what I have.

I believe being grateful is learned skill. The more more you practice the more content and comfortable you become. Who doesn't like that. But I think it's especially important when it comes to watches for the simple fact that it really easy to get caught up in the race thinking you need the next best thing. You really don't. More and nicer aren't always the answer to being happy.

Thank you. For me too

I saw a video of a guy with over 60 watches and it shocked me out of my trajectory. I’m down from about 12/13 to 5 watches atm (in my “collection”-not including inherited watches and childhood watches)

I found reframing myself as an “enthusiast” rather than a “collector” has really helped me understand what I’m doing better.

I love so many watches but there isn’t enough time, money or love for me to own every watch, I’m happy where I am now but we always want more…..

I've told myself numerous different ways of ending, sticking to seiko an gs I was going to get gs different movements ie quartz manual auto spring an still could, was going to get seiko first diver gs first watch, chrono dress diver field was once a goal,so where am I going now with it I'm honestly not sure but I am going, psychologically analysing my why always liked watches and I think a time in my life my brain needed something to focus on searching for watches an research was the way its my focus and distraction from negative things I could be going over 24/7 like I do with watches,so therapy is my unprofessional diagnosis 🤣😬👌works for me don't prescribe yourself through my advice see a professional doctor or just ask Google like the professional doctor does 😷🤣

Bro! If I was your banker. I'd have the best watches. No wait.... You'd have the best watches.

So you do know when enough is enough. I'm in your camp. When I can't do it anymore. I get afraid that if I lose it. I'll be selling my house for a ALS and that's to late.

Tough question….Outside of my recent acquisition of the 124270 Explorer, I haven’t purchased a watch in over 4-5 years and considered myself done…but that was mostly due to series a parameters I set for myself years ago (I.e only 4 watches at any given time, stainless steel, midsize, only one of each brand, etc). This has kept me out of “trouble” for the most part

I think we're in the boat. Definitely the same buying philosophy. I hear there is a cure but you have to stop buying watches. I haven't reach out yet. 😂
