Never thought I would wear a 33mm!

Being a new enthusiast, it can sometimes feel overwhelming navigating this hobby. I have already encountered snakes, elitists, haters, and people who don’t really care, as well as some very lovely people! I started frequenting my local CITIZEN watch store, where I started chatting with the store manager..who has 23 years experience with watches. A wealth of information! And someone who can help navigate, the sometimes murky waters, of this hobby. One thing he has taught me is that he does not sell watches according to the size of the mm (an idea really propagated by invicta (which we both dislike), we think, where bigger is better). But by the way the watch feels and looks on an individual wrist. Case in point the Bulova “banker”…never in my wildest dream would I ever have thought I would wear this..in fact I have seen it online and have passed it up many times because it is “33mm”..I tried it on..and I was infatuated with it. It looks perfect on my 7 inch wrist too! The moral of the story? YouTube isn’t a watch store. Go try on watches, get your hands dirty, make friends. You will become a more savvy collector because of it.

Really nice watch and fits perfectly 😁 👍

It’s true there’s a lot more than some dimensions that determines how a watch looks on the wrist. Especially with rectangular watches, they always seem to wear bigger than you’d think if you’re used to round watches.

Spot on that different case shapes wear very differently and that dimensions don't tell the whole story.

32mm says hi

The case might be only 33mm, but what about the lug-to-lug width? It's probably 45mm-ish judging from the picture on your wrist.

Anyway, nice catch! It's a beautiful watch, indeed.

I don't know that Invicta is the reason we refer to MM when sizing watches. I agree with your Citizen rep, don't concentrate on just MM when choosing a watch. Lug to lug, lug overhang, angle of lugs, and thickness all play a part in how we view and feel a watch. At the end of the day we all come in different sizes and shapes and that also dictates what we can comfortably wear.

This is a 1929 Banker:

This is the watch that Bulova is reissuing. The Banker changed a lot in its run of production. They became very sleek by the 1960's. This 1929 is 27x35mm. As @thekris said, non-round watches wear larger than round ones do. I will bet that this 1929 has some wrist presence.

There are two kinds of gate keeping in watches: intentional ("don't buy this or that") and unintentional. I think that Bulova (and Citizen) are engaging in a little bit of unintentional gate keeping. By making watches a certain size they exclude a large percentage of potential wearers. You can pull that one off with a 7 inch wrist. Mine is a little smaller, and this would bump up upon what I could wear. I think that someone with a 6.5 inch wrist would find it too large. This is my criticism of Bulova re-issues. They are just slightly too large. They keep half of us on the other side of the gate.

Edit: Why a center second hand? The answer is who they are marketing to (hint: not me).

Hey, that's a good little watch. You never know about any watch until you try it on.

You are correct. Love that Bulova.
