Q: How did you get into watch collecting?

It all started during the Covid-19 pandemic when I wanted to resize a watch bracelet myself. I looked for some tutorials, I came across some videos, and down the rabbit hole I went. I have been falling ever since...

Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?

I believe it was a Casio digital, which I got for Christmas when I was around 7 years old. Unfortunately it was too big, and so it got exchanged for a Lorus digital. Too bad I didn't take better care of it, and no longer have it...

Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?

I have this skeletonized Avalon pocket watch which my wife gave me on our wedding night. After our honeymoon we had to live separated for 9 months, the watch really helped me get through this and is absolutely priceless to me!

Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?

Don't spend your money on fashion watches! You pay for the name on the dial, but - what you generally get apart from that - is not worth anything near the price tag. There are so many great affordable watches out there that are famous for their quality and will last you much longer!

Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?

My collection mostly consists of the affordable Japanese trifecta: Casio, Orient, and Seiko. Apart from that I have Boctok, and Timex. Of course I keep up with the latest releases, and I am just as fascinated by them as the next guy. However, the watch that has been on my radar for the longest time - and that doesn't seem to go anywhere - is the Hamilton Khaki Aviation Pilot Day Date as worn by Matthew McConaughey in Interstellar.

Q: What is your grail watch and why?

My perception of a grail watch might differ from the general understanding. To me a grail watch is a watch I aspire to owning some day but that's not necessarily out of reach. So where normally the idea is that with the acquisition of the grail watch the collection is complete, in my case I will keep having new grail watches as I go. At the moment my grail is the Omega Speedmaster, because of its history and importance. I hope I'll be able to pick a new grail soon after I get it.
