Why I Prefer Mechanical Watches

Firstly, I refer to a mechanical watch as being either automatic or hand wind. Quartz watches are fantastic, they are more accurate than mechanical watches, a good one is arguably more reliable than a mechanical watch, and they are most certainly cheaper than a mechanical watch. The problem with quartz watches is that we take them for granted. A mechanical watch can keep fantastic time, and it's all because of a series of cogs and springs. What's more, if it's automatic it's running because of you're movement. There is the added advantage of not having to change a battery, but to be honest that's almost non consequential. A mechanical watch is like a young beautiful woman, you never know what you are going to get, and you're always grateful if it turns out for the best, whilst a quartz watch is like your wife, reliable but indefinitely a bit boring and quite soleless

I know. I own a Yema Rallygraf which is lovely, I just find it harder to bond, that's all

I have both and I feel more affinity to the mechanical rather than quartz. It’s obviously a personal choice but I think of it similar to the electric cars. They both do the same job but I’d rather drive an ICE car and have the maintenance of an engine than a battery rechargeable one.

Some pretty cool wives too!🤣

I like both, but after collecting for so long, I’m starting to prefer quartz. The more you know about high quality quartz movements, the more you can appreciate them.

·

While, you make a good point, I would suggest that you don't let your wife or girlfriend read about your choices😳😂

·

I don't have a preference. What some see as bonding with a mechanical can also be seen as inconvenience, but they're definitely more involving. Not much can touch my Conquest VHP for accuracy, but I still have automatics too. I buy according to aesthetic, pretty much.

·

I love how this post helped affirm my growing transition to quartz movements. 🤣

·

Maybe you need a new wife mate 🫠

A mechanical movement is a symbiotic relationship. It’s alive because you’re alive. That’s my dramatic take :). It’s one of the reasons I prefer mechanicals over quartz.

Is there an inflatable watch because I think a lot of guys on here must have one of those hidden in the wardrobe?

Quartz is infinitely better than mechanical because it has a battery, requires no maintenance except changing that battery, and quartz watches haven't used the same tiny handful of designs which have gone unchanged since the 1950s when our parents rode 10 miles to school in blizzards on the backs of woolly mammoths.

I’m with you on this, i realized this when it felt easier for me to get rid of my Seiko 5s but my older citizen promaster eco drive was glued to me.

It’s just my grab and go, and very accurate. Which led me to buy the seitona chrono; it’s solar, easy maintenance, and accurate.🤷🏻‍♂️

You have a good point, and that’s why I also love mechanical watches. But (especially as a musician) I can appreciate quartz just as much.

Keeping time with a vibrating quartz crystal is pretty soulful to me, especially since they’re cut in the shape of a tuning fork.

Also knowing that the contacts on the crystal are so small, but are reliably and accurately counting 32k oscillations per second, and can do so for tens of years just blows my mind. Not to mention that the gear train can be serviced like a mechanical watch (on decent movements) is just really cool to me.

·

Uhm, maybe consider reassessing your wife situation😬

·

To me quartz is not boring at all. I love mechanical and I love quartz as well. There is ingenuity, a lot to admire and get lost into, in both worlds.

·

Yeah a quartz watch is way more reliable and cheaper to own from a service standpoint, why would you ever want essentially a 150 year old technology. However, if you are a gear head (like myself) it is automatic/mechanical all the way. I know there is better out there but I am in love with the application of these watches so I loose +/-5 seconds a day. That is an acceptable loss for some thing I love. There is a certain romance to mechanical watches that a quartz watch can never achieve....... I know I'm borderline snob!
