Seiko Alpinist Green. What are your thoughts on the new Alpinist GMTs?

The Seiko Alpinist Green is my favorite variant of this watch, particularly the original SARB017 without the cyclops lens and the big Prospex logo on the dial. I adore the simplicity and vintage vibe of that watch. Seiko has recently introduced new Alpinist GMTs, but they appear a bit too busy for my taste.

What are your thoughts on them? Do you like them more than 5 Sports GMTs?

I didn't start collecting early enough to obtain one of the original Alpinists and considering the secondary market price for the quartz GMT Alpinists, the new ones are a bargain.

I don't find anything busy about the new GMT model apart from the extra hand, the watch seems more refined compared to the standard three-hander. The new indices placement, removal cyclops and new date position only have made the watch more refined. If they tried to cramp the 24-hour markings within the dial, it would have been too busy.

I too am a huge fan of the original SARB017, and although I think the new GMTs are nice, that don't capture the charm of this model I feel, could also be due to the dial color, I'm not entirely sure.

·

Prefer them to the "normal" Alpinist tbh, tho may be a little too Explorer (?).

·

Just saw the new GMT, but prefer the OG Green. Still on my list.

Bad homage of the classic SARB017

I'd head over to the new Alpinist GMTs and all your dreams may come true.

The red Alpinist GMT quartz models with perpetual calendar. Costs around $1200-1600 depending on the condition.

I think a green gmt alpinist is just a matter of time. Hopefully it won’t be a limited edition. I’d also go for that one.

I’m wearing the current model green one now. I love it. Cyclops magnifies date very nice but I understand why some don’t like it. In summary I think the current version is a better buy than paying more for the prior version. I’m not into GMTs as I don’t travel much

GMT on an Alpinist is fine, certainly more logical than sticking one in a dive watch. Not that logic and watch collecting have much in common of course 😁

I'll have you know it's very essential to have GMT on a dive watch when I'm going forwards and backwards swimming in a pool between Belgium and France! 😉

The Alpinist situation has been flogged to death now in my opinion …… it’s going the same way as the SKX007/9 debacle where Seiko ruthlessly cashed in on the Seiko 5KX stuff which now change hands at half the price.

The iconic SARB017 can’t be improved upon, the horrible prospex versions and so called limited editions (come on they are simply a different coloured dial) are a way of rinsing money from customers, the so called baby Alpinist which bear no resemblance to the real thing are a waste of time, and these new GMT versions are a hyped up attempt to charge even more money with a cross between the baby Alpinist and the Rolex explorer 2

I have ditched Seiko now, I own some of their most iconic pieces but I’m off to Citizen/Hamilton for the under £500 stuff, far better quality and original designs.

Rant over just me blowing off.
