I hope one day someone explains exactly how a 6 o’clock date is any more symmetrical than a date at 3 o’clock (or 9 o’clock or 12 o’clock).

Whatever perceived lack of symmetry exists with a date at the 3 o’clock also exists with a date at the 6 o’clock where the date wheel is offset by an index or numeral on the opposite side of the dial.

When the date is at 6 o'clock, the left and right side of the dial have an equilibrium that is missing when the date is at 3 o'clock, for example. (Although I suppose the same could be said for a date at 12 o'clock.)

I find a date at 3 o'clock (or 4:00 or 4:30) to disrupt the balance of the dial.

I certainly have watches with a date at the "3", but it's not my first preference. But if I really want a watch, I sometimes don't really have a choice.

But doesn't that mean a 3 o'clock date has a top and bottom equilibrium that is missing when the date is at 6 o'clock? And a 6 o'clock date disrupts the top-bottom balance of the dial?

No matter where the date window is located, it is always offset by an index or a numeral on the opposite side of the dial and the symmetry is no more or less regardless of where the date window is placed (unless it is placed somewhere like 4:30 where there is no corresponding index on the opposite side of the dial).

I'm certainly not suggesting what you should and shouldn't like. And I've heard the symmetry argument many times. It just seems to me like "symmetry" isn't the correct word for what makes the 6 o'clock date window appealing to so many.

Certainly an ongoing debate, particularly in the world of art & design. I would just say that my eye seems to look at a watch dial and orient along the vertical axis and not the horizontal. Hence my response. I say "symmetry" because of the left/right mirroring along the vertical axis (12 to 6) of the dial. I don't find myself orienting a "symmetry" the same way along the horizontal axis (9 to 3) into upper/lower halfs.

I actually have both an Oris BCPD and this Bulova. Each have their attractive points that make them a pleasure to wear. The Bulova is certainly more affordable.

Some brands have started to put the date at the 12 and I actually think this is my favourite position but I would be tempted to just set it to 12 most of the time.

I really believe it must fit the time piece. Date/Day features are nor for every one. I really like how they placed it on the piece.
