What do you think about dresswatches?

Are Dresswatches worth it or whats your take on them? Would you buy a expensive dresser? Or rather buy a cheaper one and go for a expensive daily?

If you wear a suit everyday then get an expensive dress watch. If not, spend the money on a different style of watch.

·

I would buy an expensive dress watch for the collection. But my problem is there are so many other, sportier watches I’d rather spend the money on. The day I went to the AD to buy a Cartier Santos I left with a Black Bay Pro.

I have both ends of the scale, a VC dress and a Poljot de Luxe (about £100), and I switch between them easily. Nobody knows what's on my wrist but me so it's a question of what floats your boat. You could also look at a 50s/ 60s Omega Seamaster or Geneve, usually around £600-£1200, stylish and classy.

I find them to be the most versatile of all styles - great when dressing up, or with a work suit, or jeans and t-shirt. The only time they're not wearable is in the water.

Passt iwie nicht zum Lebensstil die Dresswatch aber wenn man eine sieht, ist sie immer ein Hingucker 🥹

That’s a good point! The few dressier watches I own are extremely comfortable and would make good daily wear pieces.

What about jeans and dresswatch? No go?

I live a very casual lifestyle, and rarely dress up, but I really like the look of dress watches, and have a few in my collection. The opportunity to wear them in an appropriate setting rarely comes up for me, but that doesn't stop me from wearing them anyway.

I love the idea of the old days where everyone only wore a dresswatch …

Dress watch and jeans is a perfect pairing. By definition dress watches are understated, so they pair with anything.

I would probably only wear a dress watch a couple of times a year so realistically I have two options 1 get a cheap dedicated dress watch for less than £100 or 2 get a watch that would do as a dress watch but is also practical enough for daily use and spend more, something like a Nomos or a Zelos Nova.

Definitely a “Go go” it can look sooooo good dressing down a dress watch for example with an grey suede strap instead of a black leather one or maybe even putting cool colored straps on it

·

I would consider owning a dress watch.

·

I got one more … what you think about this one?

Your cellini is really something else. Great ✌️

Thank you. It's definitely the type of watch that makes me wish I had more opportunities to dress up a bit. It doesn't really suit my Roots sweat pants and plaid shirt 😀

Some would consider a bubble back for a dresswatch or even an vintage 34mm rolex .. which went to the everest? Whats your take on them

I’d wear that if I felt it was tough enough to take whatever activity I was doing I had a 1940s a Hal calender I’d wear to the gym because it said shockproof and water resistant on it

I am in the minority in that I gravitate towards dressier pieces. As lots of others have said before me, it's not unusual for dress watches to go well with casual outfits. The first time I tried my JLC Ultra Thin (my dressiest piece), I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt. It paired very well with that outfit! If you like dress watches, I would at least try out some with clothes you typically wear before giving up on it.

For the record I never wear a suit at work. A shirt, sure, but not a suit.

·

Its a must-have in the collection to me. More than a diver.

I think you can as long as you’re wearing a collar type shirt or a polo.

Bold statement right there but I guess one dress up more than go for a dive 😂

Your jlc has a real „ warm look“ to it which I like very mouch but the Lange is just a home run. I also see dress watches as a endgame where you play with all the divers and chronos before but at the end its the one fine dress watch one should wear

The Lange is my favourite for a reason 😉 It should be noted that I don't think it pairs as well with casual outfits: The Roman numerals clash with the look. I know that the Saxonia Thin looks amazing with lots of casual outfits, so it's not a Lange thing in general.

It's all down to personal taste. Until recently, I've always been been drawn to sports watches. Now I am looking at dress watches more and more. I never choose a watch based on value retention or growth.

You just said it. For me, there are more high end events and ocassions than actual diving.

Whats the dress watch you want to get by now?

Whats the dress watch you want to get by now?

Breguet, Patek, Parmigiani, I haven't narrowed it down yet.

I'm thinking of getting a Frederique Constant first to see how I get on with a dress watch before going all in.

You have some heavy hitter already. Let me know which way youre going with the dresser. I‘m curious how do you like the 1675 compared to newer rolex sport models?

The 1675 is much more refined than the new GMT. It's lighter and thinner. The bracelet is the jangly cheap feeling vintage style however.

I prefer the 1675, but it's not something I'm going to wear in the same way I do its modern sibling.
