Not a fan of the fan?

I’ve been wanting to write this post for a while. I see people disliking the power reserve indicator on the front of their Grand Seiko Spring Drives.

Of course it’s a matter of taste what you like and what you dislike, and I don’t want to debate taste here.

However, I believe that the power reserve indicator is meant to invoke the image of a Japanese fan. When I bought my Shunbun in Ginza Tokyo, pictured above among the cherry blossoms that inspired it, I also received the GS branded fan with pouch and box to match. That fan literally has the markings on it of a power reserve indicator, not to mention the same angles and dividers (it’s scented too!)

My point is: the power reserve indicator is not an obstruction of the imagery, but a part of it!

It's perhaps what I like the most on that watch.

I love mine… even though I criticized it before for looking like a styrofoam … heck I love it!!

·

It’s one of my favorite parts of the watch ! Wouldn’t be the same without it

·

Prefer it on the back but it would never stop me from getting a GS if it’s on the dial.

·

Like it a lot 😏

·

I was recently in a GS AD and them in person, watches IMHO are stunning!

·

Absolutely gorgeous watch!

I'm a huge GS fan and own the SLGH005, and I am aware that this is supposed to represent the Japanese fan. But it just doesn't appeal to me visually. I'm pretty sure that is the reason the 9RA2 exists the way it does today, with the power reserve moved to the back. This way it gives those who prefer that an option and still retain the Spring Drive functionality. Just my thoughts.

Yeah, I’m not criticizing your opinion or taste in the slightest. There are good reasons to feel the way you do and I believe for example a manual wind watch *should* have the power indicator on the back, since you have to take it off to wind it. I don’t feel the same about a spring drive. Since the fan imagery has escaped some people I wanted to contribute to at least understanding that it’s not just a random dial slammed onto the front.

Just one comment: if they didn't like the feature, they should not have bought the watch.

·

Still should be on the back and let those dials shine

The fan is cool though

I personally am a fan of the fan. If/when I get a GS it will be a Spring Drive with the fan.

Met a nice fellow at top golf and gave him a hearty compliment cause he was rocking one of these!

·

Never thought about it. Can’t unsee it more. Awesome watch!

·

Is the fan standard issue with each watch? 😮 Or an AD bonus gift?

I was under the impression that it was a bonus gift at this particular AD, but I don’t know for sure. It was a great experience with champagne/drinks and fancy chocolate/sweets in the heart of Tokyo’s Ginza district.

Nice #grandseiko wear it well 👌🏻

It's incredibly useful, especially if you don't wear your GS every day. I wish more watches had power indicators on the dial
